COURSE OVERVIEW
This course develops students ’competence in comprehending text critically by making use of various reading strategies. This course
also hones students ’critical thinking towards academic journal articles as the primary reading resources of the course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. explain various critical reading strategies
2. use various critical reading strategies to comprehend a text particularly academic journal articles
3. critically evaluate various factual texts particularly academic journal articles to develop a sound argument(s) related to ELT
4. logically and systematically present the text evaluation both in an oral presentation and written essay
5. use appropriate referencing style as requested both manually or software assisted to avoid plagiarism at all time

DELIVERY STRATEGY
Students will learn through lectures, group works, class discussion, reading activity and feedback comments on their work.

Description :
You are required to make an articles comparison under certain topics of your choice related to second language reading. This
assignment will be used as the foundation of the other assignments you must complete in this course.
You should meet the following requirements:

1. Your work should contains 3 articles from reputable journals such as Applied Linguistics, Language Learning, Studies in
Second Language Acquisition, TESOL Quarterly, Reading in a Foreign Language, etc.
*Valid for the course taken in the even semester of 2019/2020 academic year

2. You are also required to run a check using editing software or web (e.g., https://www.grammarly.com) or have it proofread
before submitting. You must provide evidence of this editing process in a supplementary document that will be submitted along
with the articles comparison.
3. Use the template provided in ELearning UNWIRA.
Reference to the literature is a must. APA reference style is to be used as the citation style.

2. Group presentation (as mid-term exam)

Length : 20 minutes (15 minutes presentation and 5 minutes QnA session)
Description :
You are required to work in a group of 3 to 4 people to create a presentation on certain topics related to second language reading
that will be discussed in class. You must use the annotated bibliography from the previous assignment and other necessary
sources to complete this assignment. The objective of your presentation is to convince your audience about a certain position of
an argument.
Your presentation must
1. Have a clear defined topic and position in a debate
2. Provide a comparison of both sides of the arguments supported by the literature
3. Provide why your side of the argument is a better option supported by the literature
4. Allow each member of the group to speak equally
5. Include as least 5 journal articles from reputable journal publishers

Reference to the literature is a must. APA reference style is to be used as the citation style.

3. Annotated bibliography (as final)

Length : 300 – 500 words for each article entry and 500 words for articles comparison
Description :
You are required to make an annotated bibliography under certain topics related to second language reading that will be discussed
in class. The annotated bibliography should meet the following requirements.
1. Your work should contains 5 articles from reputable journals such as Applied Linguistics, Language Learning, Studies in
Second Language Acquisition, TESOL Quarterly, Reading in a Foreign Language, etc.
2. Each article entry should have a brief summary of the article and how it will contribute to both your group presentation and
critical essay.
3. At the end of your paper, provide a comparison of all of the articles discussed previously. This should include the similarities
and differences also the strengths and limitations of the studies in your paper.
4. You are also required to run a check using editing software or web (e.g., https://www.grammarly.com) or have it proofread
before submitting. You must provide evidence of this editing process in a supplementary document that will be submitted along
with the annotated bibliography.
5. Reference to the literature is a must. APA reference style is to be used as the citation style.

GENERAL STYLE AND PRESENTATION GUIDELINES FOR ESSAY


Font and font size : Product Sans or Arial, 12 point
Margin : 2.5 cm for all (left, right, top and bottom)
Spacing : 1.5 or double space
Referencing : The latest edition of American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style

SUBMISSION
1. Write the number of words at the end of your assignment (e.g.,, 1500 words) and run a check using editing software or web
(e.g., https://www.grammarly.com) or have it proofread before submitting.
2. Submit an electronic copy of your assignment to the associated folder in the ELearning UNWIRA . This will be explained
further by your lecturer.
3. Hardcopy is not required unless stated otherwise.
4. Late submission is generally discouraged. However, contact your lecturer for late submission request at least 48 hours prior
to the submission date if you need it.
