One of the causes of galling is the increase in friction between mating threads as the
threads begin to yield due to over tightening of the fasteners. For a reference on the
proper torque for stainless steel fasteners, click on Stainless Steel Torque Chart

Hex Cap Screws Grip Gauging & Body Length ASME B18.2.1
The length of thread on bolts shall be controlled by the grip gauging length (LG max) and body length (LB min). The thread length is
calculated LT = L nom (nominal thread length) – LG max. The minimum body length is the distance measured from the underhead bearing
surface to the last scratch of thread to the top of the extension angle. LB = LG max – transition thread length Y.

Torque Values for Stainless Steel and Non-Ferrous Fasteners
Caution: All material included in this chart is advisory only, and its use by anyone is voluntary. In developing this
information, Fastenal has made a determined effort to present its contents accurately. Extreme caution should be used
when using a formula for torque/tension relationships. Torque is only an indirect indication of tension. Under/over
tightening of fasteners can result in costly equipment failure or personal injury.

Suggested Maximum Torque Values - a guide based upon actual lab testing on dry or near dry fasteners wiped clean. While Fastenal has
used reliable sources and testing to determine these values, there are many variables that will affect the results and the use of this
information is at sole risk of the user.
No two bolts respond exactly the same to a given torque. There are numerous "real world" complications. Things such as dirt in a tapped
hole, grease of oil on the threads, damaged threads, hole misalignment, accuracy of torque measuring device, and numerous other factors
can alter the torque-tension relationship. Even perfect input torque can give a variation of preload by as much as 25%.
