 HISTORY OF BADMINTON
 Badminton was invented long ago , a form of sport played in ancient Greece
and Egypt.
 In Europe the game was called”jeu de volant”
 Badminton came from a child’s game called battledore and shuttlecock
played in China,Japan,India and Greece ,in which two players hit a feathered
shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. The game was called ‘’POONA’’
in India during the 18th century ,and British Army Officers stationed there took
the Indian version back to England in the 1860’s.The army men introduced
the game to friends, but the new sport was definitely launched there at a party
given in 1873 by the Duke of Beaufort at his country place,”Badminton”in
Gloucestershire .During that time, the game had no name ,but it was referred
to as “The game of Badminton”and thereupon,Badminton became its official
name .
 The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with 9
founding members:

 FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT OF BADMINTON

 RACKET
 Badminton racket is one of the most important tools a player has in the
game.Rackets are much lighter than the most other sports rackets
because they are made from materials such as aluminum .

 Maximum length of handle is 27.77 inches and a

width of 9 inches
 SHUTTLECOCK
 Badminton shuttlecock ,also referred to as a shuttle or birdie, acts similarly to a ball in
other racket sports,However the design of the birdie creates more drag as it is propelled
through the air due to its feathered. The shuttlecock is made up of a cone shape with a
hard cork at its tip.Variety of shuttlecock ----more expensive models are the made of
feathers, less expensive if made of plastic feathers.Shuttle has 16 feathers attached to
the base ,length of feathers ranges between 2.44 and 2.75 inches.
 NET
 A mesh net divides badminton court into two sides .A badminton net is placed lower
than a volleyball net at five feet and one inch high on the sides and five feet high in the
center .The length may vary depending on whether doubles or singles are playing with
singles reaching 17 feet and doubles reaching 22 feet. The net is 30 inches wide with a
3 -inch white tape doubled over the top
 FACILITIES
 The badminton court should be 44 feet long by 22 feet wide if playing doubles, and 44
feet long by 17 feet wide for singles. If the facility is indoors, there needs to be enough
height for the shuttlecock to be able to float across the net without hitting the ceiling.
This height may vary depending on the strength of the players.
 OFFICIATING OFFICIALS

Oficials of badminton included 1 referee,1 umpire,1 service judge,and 8 to 10 line judge.

 UMPIRE
 The main judge for the particular badminton game.He/She has the power to
overrule any decisions made by the service judge or line judges .The umpire is the person
ensuring the the badminton game is run smoothly and prevent any players from delaying the
game play .If a player requested to change the shuttle the umpire will need to approve that
the change will be made, the umpire looks out the fault committed around the net area
whether the player touched the net when returning the shuttle. The umpire is responsible to
make “fault”call when the shuttle touches players attire. In badminton it will be a fault or foul
when shuttle when touches the players attire
 SERVICE JUDGE
 The service judge is responsible in making a ‘service fault’ call and to
provide shuttles to the players
 LINE JUDGES
 Line judges sit beside the badminton court (right in front of every in / out
lines )to determine whether the shuttle is inside or outside the boundaries of
the court.Their calls are usually very subjective and are often controversial.
 REFEREE
 Referee is the most senior official. They are having the absolute authority and
they are in charge of all matters which affect play and the players -both on the
court and off the court. You will not see referees carry out their duty on the
court. They are more of back end force .Referees will only show face if there
are any special issues happening. If any conflict or issues being raised by the
umpire, the referee will exist and will try out to solved .The decision of the
referee are generally finale.
