Nozzle ring erosion
In heavy fuel operation, ero::.lve wear c..an appear on the nozzle rings. It is caused by
solid particles in the exhaust gas, such as combustion residue, catfines as residue from
the refining process, and rust from the pipe system, amongst others.
Apart from the operating time, the Increase In wear depends on the content of such
particles, from their Impact speed on the nozzle ring, which Is again another function
of the gas pressure ratio in the turbine, as well as on the load profile of the engine.
According to our experience, dry cleaning does not, as suspected by a few customers,
exert a measurable Influence on the erosion. This certainly links In with the short
operating time of 20 - 30 secs. per cleaning process, and with the relatively soft cleaning
media.
The hard, and particularly heavy particles gather In the radial turbine, due to the
centrifugal effect in the area between the nozzle ring and turbine rotor. They are then
flung against the nozzle ring by the centrifugal forces, and/or circulate with the peri-
pheral speed of the rotor, until their weight and size has reduced so much, that they
are carried forward from the exhaust gas current. This also explains wear appearing
in the exhaust area on the inner side of the nozzle ring blades.
To Improve the solidity of the nozzel rings and thus also take measures against erosion,
for a few years now, we have been manufacturing nozzle rings from high wear-resistant
cobalt-alloy material. In that way, we have achieved whatever Is possible In terms of
material.
1. Long dwell time for the heavy fuel in a heated settling tank, and separation to
remove sand and catflnes.

The normal service life of the nozzle rings Is at over 20,000 operating hours at the
moment, provided no extraordinary operating conditions prevail. We therefore recommend
that the nozzle rings be left In the turbocharger as long as no deterioration of the
operating conditions Is observed.
When doing maintenance work at the standard servicing Intervals, we recommend that
the nozzle rings should be measured and examined as described below:
A table showing the permissible wear levels ilL for the varying turbocharger series, Is
likewise enclosed In the accompanying diagram sheet.
A nozzle ring is thus to be replaced by a new one, when the cross sectional area of
flow has increased by 15% In the narrowest cross section due to wear.
