1. Scope

This GIS provides guidance for purchase, design, documentation, shipping, construction, installation,
and commissioning considerations. The information included in this specification is not intended to
cover complete details.

2. Normative references

The following normative documents contain requirements that, through reference in this text,
constitute requirements of this technical practice. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or
revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this

5. Submittals & documentation

a. Contractor shall submit drawings and documents in accordance with contract data
requirements.
b. Contractor shall submit for approval, drawings showing HVAC equipment and ductwork
layout, cross section, equipment schedule, and installation details to clearly indicate the
proper assembly of all HVAC components and ductwork.
c. Contractor’s professional engineers shall submit complete signed HVAC load calculations
for the buildings, testifying conformity to applicable specifications and stated
requirements.
d. Contractor's submittals with bid shall include, brochures, and preliminary drawings
adequate for BP’s bid evaluation, and verifying conformance to the BP’s schedule by
giving the date’s contingent on a specified purchase order date for the following:
1. List of approval drawings and design calculation submittal,

2. Required approval time for submittals,


3. Construction schedule and duration for completion,
4. Provide two-year spare parts operating list with prices,
5. Submit samples for approval of material selections as required.
e. The contractor shall submit in his proposal a listing of any clarifications, exceptions, or
deviations from compliance with the requirements of this specification, or any of the
referenced documents attached to this inquiry package.
f. The contractor shall provide technical description, including supporting documentation as
defined in the contract data requirements, to cover all aspects of design, construction, and
testing of the required HVAC system.
g. Contractor’s proposal shall include calculations for air conditioning loads and include the
size of the air conditioning equipment for each system.
h. Upon completion of fabrication of building, contractor shall provide complete operation
and maintenance manual including the following requirements:
1. As built drawings,
2. Data sheets on products, equipment, and material used,
3. Copies of warranties, maintenance parts list, troubleshooting data contractor prints of
all materials and equipment furnished.

6. General

a. Onshore design shall be as per GP 14-02.


b. Offshore design shall be as per GP 14-03.
c. The building HVAC systems shall be designed in accordance with this specification and
applicable part of referenced specifications, codes, and standards, furnished complete with
accessories for the intended service as required by this specification.
d. Compliance with the provisions of this specification shall not relieve the contractor of the
responsibility of furnishing a properly designed building, which is suited to meet the
specified operating conditions and performance requirements.
e. The contractor shall be responsible for the coordination and guarantee of the overall
performance of the HVAC systems with all included features and accessories.
f. If any portion of a specification results in a deviation from contractor'
s shop practices,
contractor shall refer, in writing, such items to BP for resolution.

7. Onshore

7.1. Sound attenuators

7.1.1. General
a. Attenuators shall be factory made units designed for mounting in ductwork systems to
reduce the transfer of mechanical and air-generated noise within the ductwork. The
attenuators shall provide a high, broad band insertion loss per unit length.
b. Specific attention shall be given to avoid turbulent air flow at entry and exits of
attenuators, to ensure optimum performance and to prevent noise regeneration taking
place.

7.1.2. Construction
a. Splitters shall be mounted in the vertical plane to prevent sagging.
b. Units shall be normally constructed with outer metal casing of rectangular or circular
cross-section fitted with internal lining and splitters of sound absorbing material within air
passage ways. The facing of splitters or lining shall be of dense absorbing material or
perforated or expanded metal. The whole arrangement shall be aerodynamically and
acoustically designed to provide maximum acoustic performance with minimum resistance
to air flow.

7.2. Terminal units

7.2.1. General
a. The units shall comprise an acoustically lined box incorporating a static pressure regulator
and sound baffles together with high velocity inlet and low velocity outlet air flow
connections.
b. The units may be single duct type with one primary air connection or dual duct mixing
type for use with hot and cold dual duct primary air systems. Dual duct mixing boxes shall
be provided with an additional motorised inlet mixing damper, which under the dictates of
room or space thermostats shall control the mixture of hot and cold air streams to maintain
design temperature conditions.
c. Constant volume units shall be provided with factory set constant volume regulators to
maintain a constant supply air flow at low velocity to the rooms or spaces against
variations in pressure in the primary air duct pressure. The units shall have the capability
of manual site adjustment and shall be available for both single duct and dual duct
applications.
d. Variable volume units shall incorporate a flow throttling damper arrangement in addition
to the static pressure regulator. The units shall supply air at constant temperature, the flow
rate being decreased as the cooling load reduces to maintain design conditions. With dual
duct variable air volume units, the cold duct mixing damper shall be fully open for
maximum cooling with the hot duct damper fully closed until the cold duct reaches its
minimum setting in response to a decrease in cooling load. Any further decreases in
cooling load shall result in the opening of the hot duct damper.

7.2.2. Construction
a. The casing, and the flanges on the low velocity air discharge, shall be manufactured from
galvanised sheet steel with a minimum thickness as specified on data sheets and galvanised
as per BS 2989.
b. Flange designs shall allow for safety and easy removal.
c. Access panels shall be provided with quick release fasteners.

8. Offshore

8.1. Sound attenuators

8.1.1. General
a. Thermal and sound insulation shall be fibres formed with binders into resilient flexible
blankets; densities shall be specified in data sheets.
b. Manufacturer' s standard lengths and widths shall be used as required to coordinate with
spaces to be insulated; acceptable types shall be as follows:
1. Sound attenuation blankets; R=7,

2. Thermal blankets; R=13.


c. Insulation units shall have a flame, smoke, and fuel rating of 25 or less per ASTM E84.
d. Thermal blanket units shall incorporate a foil faced reflective vapour barrier.
e. Interior wall cavity shall be filled with sound insulation
f. Quarters building Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating, minimum, shall be:
1. Exterior walls and Machine rooms - 55 dB,
2. Interior walls - 48 dB.
g. Additional sound attenuation may be required by Company based on location of living
quarters and exposure to noise sources.
h. Machinery noise and vibration shall be abated.
i. Sound Attenuators should be suitable for a maximum duct static pressure as specified on
data sheets.
j. The Sound Attenuators shall have flanged connections, suitable for mounting within
ductwork systems, with a minimum thickness as specified on data sheets.
k. Stainless steel, fully welded, attenuators shall have no permitted leakage.
l. Sound attenuators shall be selected to achieve the sound reductions specified and have a
low resistance to air flow. The attenuation material shall possess in addition to the above,
the following properties:
1. Adequate strength and cohesion to prevent sagging,
2. Resistant to erosion,
3. Resistant to disintegration and migration,
4. Odour free,
5. Non-dust producing,
6. Non-hygroscopic,
7. Not support mould growth,
8. Asbestos free,
9. Antibacterial,
10. Rodent proof.

8.1.2. Construction
a. All materials shall be in accordance with BS 476 and GP 36-10.
b. Attenuators shall be constructed from either galvanised steel sheet or stainless steel, as
indicated on the data sheets.
c. The attenuation material shall possess the following properties:
1. Adequate strength and cohesion to prevent sagging,
2. Resist erosion,
3. Odour free,
4. Non-dust producing,
5. Fire retardant to BS 476.

d. Attenuators within enclosed areas shall be constructed from galvanised mild steel casing
with galvanised mild steel internal splitters to BS 1449 and BS 2989 with a minimum
coating as per GP 6-60.
e. Attenuators installed externally, or handling external or contaminated air shall be
constructed from stainless steel plate with a minimum thickness specified in data sheets
with internal splitters with a minimum thickness specified in data sheets from stainless
steel to BS 1449 grade 316L.
f. Stainless steel attenuators shall be fully welded.
g. The internal splitters shall be perforated and riveted for galvanised materials, but shall be
welded for the stainless steel construction.
h. The splitters shall encase an infill of inorganic mineral fibre packed to a density specified
in data sheets. Flame retardant sheets shall be as per BS 476, and shall be fitted between
the infill and perforated steel to prevent particles of sound absorbent medium passing into
the air-stream.
i. Where stated on the Data Sheets the material thickness of the casing shall be increased and
the construction modified to meet the fire rating of the adjoining ductwork.
j. The entry and exit from the attenuators shall be aerodynamically shaped to minimise the
static pressure losses.
k. Circular attenuators shall have an inner cone if the performance requirements necessitate
this. The cone shall be securely fixed to the outer cylinder by supporting rods. The inner
cone and caps shall be 2 mm (0.078 in) thick and of the same material as the casing.
l. All angle shaped attenuators shall have guide vanes. The guide vanes shall be the same
material as the casing and should have a minimum thickness specified in data sheets.
Depending on the materials being used, they should be either riveted or welded to the inner
face of the casing.
m. All Sound Attenuators shall have the Vendors standard nameplate containing the following
information:
1. Project Name,
2. PO Number,
3. Vendors serial number,
4. Year of manufacture,
5. Tag number,
6. Air volume,
7. Air pressure drop,
8. Airflow indication arrow,
9. Weight.
n. The Vendor shall provide a identification label, quoting the sound attenuator tag number.
o. All sound attenuators shall be provided with lifting lugs or eyes at both ends of the
assembly.
p. The attenuator shall be tested to BS 4718.

8.2. Terminal units

8.2.1. General
a. The terminal unit should consist of a constant volume controller, electric heater and an
attenuator suitable for connection to a high velocity constant volume ductwork system.
b. Each controller shall have a single inlet that has been factory calibrated to maintain a
constant air flow; in addition it should be capable of allowing site adjustment of air flow
volume within acceptable limits.
c. The regulator shall be powered from the platform plant air supply having a differential
pressure range specified in data sheets.
d. An oscillation damper shall be provided.
e. It should be noted that provided the vendor has a certificate of conformity for similar items
then testing could be waived.
f. The heating coils shall be rated under normal operating conditions, for a maximum surface
temperature as stated on data sheets.
g. The maximum face velocity shall be as stated on the data sheets
h. The air temperature internal to the terminal box shall be specified on data sheets
i. Two thermal cut-outs shall be provided. The high limit thermocouple shall be set as
specified on data sheets, and shall include a manual reset button mounted on the cover
plate of heater terminal plate. The second thermocouple shall be set as specified on data
sheets and will be automatically reset.

8.2.2. Construction
a. The casing, and the flanges on the low velocity air discharge, shall be manufactured from
galvanised sheet steel with a minimum thickness of 1 mm (0.039 in) galvanised to BS
2989 Grade Z2.
b. Flange designs shall allow for easy removal.
c. Access panels shall be provided with quick release fasteners with safety locking
mechanisms.
d. The element shall be supported at intervals to completely eliminate sagging and shall be
mounted on removable plates, arranged for easy withdrawal and maintenance.

9. Identification

a. All equipment and components shall be tagged and separately identified.


b. All terminal units and attenuators shall have the vendors standard nameplate containing the
following information:
1. Project Name,
2. PO Number,
3. Year of manufacture,
4. Tag number,
5. Air volume,
6. Air pressure drop,
7. Heater Duty,
8. Electrical supply,

10. Electrical & controls

a. All electrical components shall comply with:


1. GP 12-15,
2. GP 12-20,
3. GP 12-25,
4. GP 12-60 as applicable,
5. GP 14-02,
6. GP 14-03,
7. NFPA Codes & Standards,
8. IEC Codes & Standards.
b. Minimum control function shall include low suction pressure cut-out, high discharge
pressure cut-out, anti-recycle timer, anti-coincident timer, and all other features normally
included in a commercial type unit.
c. Controls shall consist of a microprocessor-based control system which shall control space
temperature, determine optimum fan speed, and run self diagnostics. The temperature
control range shall be as specified on data sheets.
d. The control and monitoring of HVAC systems shall be integrated with the fire suppression
system.
e. Controls shall be electric / electronic control and have capability to monitor, alarm and
control temperature, pressure and humidity continuously.
f. The system shall be furnished with dampers, thermostats, controllers and other
components as required for a complete installation.
g. Electrical wiring shall be arranged such that when an item of equipment is disconnected,
all power and interlocking wiring shall be disconnected.
h. All control wiring shall be low voltage.

11. Construction & Installation

a. Contractor shall comply with manufacturer'


s instruction and recommendations.
b. Equipment shall be installed square and plumb and accessible for proper operation and
service.
c. Installations shall be consistent in completeness and appearance whether enclosed or
exposed.
d. Punch-list items shall be addressed at the expense of the contractor.
e. Contractor shall verify that clearances are adequate to properly operate equipment.
f. All codes shall be complied with.
g. Contractor shall verify that accessory items required have been furnished.

h. All temporary wires and supports shall be removed. All hangers shall be adjusted to
evenly carry loads.
i. All debris shall be removed from ducts and equipment, inside and outside, in all areas.
j. Air systems shall be provided with clean filters at the time of job acceptance.

12. Coating

Shall be in accordance with GP 6-60 for all applications.

13. Inspection & testing

a. All inspection and testing shall comply with:


1. GP 32-10,
2. GP 32-20,
3. GP 32-48,
4. GP 32-50,
5. GP 32-51.
b. All equipment shall be inspected for damage upon arrival at jobsite.
c. Factory acceptance test shall be completed in accordance with manufacturers and BP
technical requirements.
d. After the complete installation of air conditioning system the following tests are to be
performed:
1. Performance test,
2. Pressure test,
3. Noise level tests,
4. Equipment vibration tests,
5. Controls test
6. System shut down tests.
e. All systems shall be balanced to provide the air flow rates specified on data sheets.
f. Contractor shall furnish a certified report to BP outlining the performance of the system
and equipment.
g. All punch-list items shall be addressed at the expense of the contractor.

14. Shipping

a. All equipment and materials shall be prepared for shipment in packages, containers, or
bundles bearing the brand name and the name of the manufacturer or the supplier for
whom the product is manufactured.
b. Packaging shall be adequate to prevent damage from handling, shipping, environmental
and storage and shall include:
1. Itemized bill of material,
2. Store materials and equipment within secure, well drained, lay down areas designated
by BP.

c. Complete packing (shipping) lists shall be provided with a detailed breakdown of all
standard hardware connections.
d. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for equipment shall be provided to shipper at time of
shipping.
1. MSDS shall conform to all relevant regulations where equipment will be located,
2. If any chemical so shipped is exempt from regulations, a statement to that effect shall
be included on MSDS.
