Guidance on Industry Standard for Sound Attenuators and Terminal Units
6. General
7. Onshore
7.1.1. General
a. Attenuators shall be factory made units designed for mounting in ductwork systems to
reduce the transfer of mechanical and air-generated noise within the ductwork. The
attenuators shall provide a high, broad band insertion loss per unit length.
b. Specific attention shall be given to avoid turbulent air flow at entry and exits of
attenuators, to ensure optimum performance and to prevent noise regeneration taking
place.
7.1.2. Construction
a. Splitters shall be mounted in the vertical plane to prevent sagging.
b. Units shall be normally constructed with outer metal casing of rectangular or circular
cross-section fitted with internal lining and splitters of sound absorbing material within air
passage ways. The facing of splitters or lining shall be of dense absorbing material or
perforated or expanded metal. The whole arrangement shall be aerodynamically and
acoustically designed to provide maximum acoustic performance with minimum resistance
to air flow.
7.2.1. General
a. The units shall comprise an acoustically lined box incorporating a static pressure regulator
and sound baffles together with high velocity inlet and low velocity outlet air flow
connections.
b. The units may be single duct type with one primary air connection or dual duct mixing
type for use with hot and cold dual duct primary air systems. Dual duct mixing boxes shall
be provided with an additional motorised inlet mixing damper, which under the dictates of
room or space thermostats shall control the mixture of hot and cold air streams to maintain
design temperature conditions.
c. Constant volume units shall be provided with factory set constant volume regulators to
maintain a constant supply air flow at low velocity to the rooms or spaces against
variations in pressure in the primary air duct pressure. The units shall have the capability
of manual site adjustment and shall be available for both single duct and dual duct
applications.
d. Variable volume units shall incorporate a flow throttling damper arrangement in addition
to the static pressure regulator. The units shall supply air at constant temperature, the flow
rate being decreased as the cooling load reduces to maintain design conditions. With dual
duct variable air volume units, the cold duct mixing damper shall be fully open for
maximum cooling with the hot duct damper fully closed until the cold duct reaches its
minimum setting in response to a decrease in cooling load. Any further decreases in
cooling load shall result in the opening of the hot duct damper.
7.2.2. Construction
a. The casing, and the flanges on the low velocity air discharge, shall be manufactured from
galvanised sheet steel with a minimum thickness as specified on data sheets and galvanised
as per BS 2989.
b. Flange designs shall allow for safety and easy removal.
c. Access panels shall be provided with quick release fasteners.
8. Offshore
8.1.1. General
a. Thermal and sound insulation shall be fibres formed with binders into resilient flexible
blankets; densities shall be specified in data sheets.
b. Manufacturer' s standard lengths and widths shall be used as required to coordinate with
spaces to be insulated; acceptable types shall be as follows:
1. Sound attenuation blankets; R=7,

Guidance on Industry Standard for Sound Attenuators and Terminal Units
8.1.2. Construction
a. All materials shall be in accordance with BS 476 and GP 36-10.
b. Attenuators shall be constructed from either galvanised steel sheet or stainless steel, as
indicated on the data sheets.
c. The attenuation material shall possess the following properties:
1. Adequate strength and cohesion to prevent sagging,
2. Resist erosion,
3. Odour free,
4. Non-dust producing,
5. Fire retardant to BS 476.
d. Attenuators within enclosed areas shall be constructed from galvanised mild steel casing
with galvanised mild steel internal splitters to BS 1449 and BS 2989 with a minimum
coating as per GP 6-60.
e. Attenuators installed externally, or handling external or contaminated air shall be
constructed from stainless steel plate with a minimum thickness specified in data sheets
with internal splitters with a minimum thickness specified in data sheets from stainless
steel to BS 1449 grade 316L.
f. Stainless steel attenuators shall be fully welded.
g. The internal splitters shall be perforated and riveted for galvanised materials, but shall be
welded for the stainless steel construction.
h. The splitters shall encase an infill of inorganic mineral fibre packed to a density specified
in data sheets. Flame retardant sheets shall be as per BS 476, and shall be fitted between
the infill and perforated steel to prevent particles of sound absorbent medium passing into
the air-stream.
i. Where stated on the Data Sheets the material thickness of the casing shall be increased and
the construction modified to meet the fire rating of the adjoining ductwork.
j. The entry and exit from the attenuators shall be aerodynamically shaped to minimise the
static pressure losses.
k. Circular attenuators shall have an inner cone if the performance requirements necessitate
this. The cone shall be securely fixed to the outer cylinder by supporting rods. The inner
cone and caps shall be 2 mm (0.078 in) thick and of the same material as the casing.
l. All angle shaped attenuators shall have guide vanes. The guide vanes shall be the same
material as the casing and should have a minimum thickness specified in data sheets.
Depending on the materials being used, they should be either riveted or welded to the inner
face of the casing.
m. All Sound Attenuators shall have the Vendors standard nameplate containing the following
information:
1. Project Name,
2. PO Number,
3. Vendors serial number,
4. Year of manufacture,
5. Tag number,
6. Air volume,
7. Air pressure drop,
8. Airflow indication arrow,
9. Weight.
n. The Vendor shall provide a identification label, quoting the sound attenuator tag number.
o. All sound attenuators shall be provided with lifting lugs or eyes at both ends of the
assembly.
p. The attenuator shall be tested to BS 4718.
8.2.1. General
a. The terminal unit should consist of a constant volume controller, electric heater and an
attenuator suitable for connection to a high velocity constant volume ductwork system.

constant air flow; in addition it should be capable of allowing site adjustment of air flow
volume within acceptable limits.
c. The regulator shall be powered from the platform plant air supply having a differential
pressure range specified in data sheets.
d. An oscillation damper shall be provided.
e. It should be noted that provided the vendor has a certificate of conformity for similar items
then testing could be waived.
f. The heating coils shall be rated under normal operating conditions, for a maximum surface
temperature as stated on data sheets.
g. The maximum face velocity shall be as stated on the data sheets
h. The air temperature internal to the terminal box shall be specified on data sheets
i. Two thermal cut-outs shall be provided. The high limit thermocouple shall be set as
specified on data sheets, and shall include a manual reset button mounted on the cover
plate of heater terminal plate. The second thermocouple shall be set as specified on data
sheets and will be automatically reset.
8.2.2. Construction
a. The casing, and the flanges on the low velocity air discharge, shall be manufactured from
galvanised sheet steel with a minimum thickness of 1 mm (0.039 in) galvanised to BS
2989 Grade Z2.
