DEEPEN

“RATE, DEPTH, AND DISTANCE OF PLANTING”

1.Rate of planting — It refers to the thickness of

sowing seeds in a row or the number of seeds to be
planted per hill.

2. Depth of planting — There are three factors that

chiefly determine the exact depth of planting seeds:
a) Size and structure of seeds — Seedling of
vegetable crops having large seeds have greater
power to push their way to the surface of the soil
than seedlings of vegetables having small seeds.
Large seeds can be safely planted deeper than
small seeds.
b) Type and condition of soils — The type and
condition of the soil influence the depth of
planting seeds. Plant deeper in a sandy soil than

in a clay soil in order to insure sufficient

moisture. On the other hand, seeds should be
planted shallower in clay than in sandy soil so
that the seedlings can reach the ground surface.
c) Type of season — Seeds may be planted at
different depths in different seasons of the year.
When the soil is just dry enough and almost too
wet for the germination of seeds, shallow
planting is advisable. During dry season, the
seeds should be planted as deeply as the power
of the seedlings will permit.

3. Distance of planting — The distance in which

seeds should be planted is determined by two factors:
a) the amount of space needed by each plant for
normal development during the time it is expected
to occupy the given location
b)the amount of space needed to properly care for
the plants which is determined by the size of the
plants at maturity if they are not to be transplanted
or the size at the time of the first shift if they are to
be transplanted

“WEEDING, CULTIVATION, AND WATER SUPPLY”

1. Weeding
Weeds take away the food, water, and sunlight
from the farm crops and reduce the farmer's income.
They are harmful because they are carriers of insects,
pests, and diseases that may be transmitted to
certain crops.

Types of Weeds and How to Control Them:

a) Annual weeds — They only reproduce by seeds
and complete their growth in one season. These
weeds can be controlled by preventing them from

producing seeds. Some ways to do this is by

pasturing animals, hoeing, and reducing growth
and development while the seeds are still small.

b) Biennial weeds -These weeds need two seasons

to complete their life cycles. They produce their
seeds in the second season of their growth, after
which they die. Biennial weeds can be controlled by
plowing, planting, cleaning cultivated crops, and
spraying on the weeds when they are still small.

c) Perennial weeds — These weeds live more than

two years. They require two or more seasons to
produce both seeds and roots or underground
stems. Perennial weeds may be eradicated by
means of the right kind of chemicals or herbicides.

2.Cultivation
It refers to the tillage operation on the soil
around rows or plots of planted crops. It destroys
weeds, and loosens and roughens the surface of the
soil so that water can penetrate it readily. Another
purpose of cultivation is to turn in organic matter or
the remains of farm products and other crop residue.

3. Irrigation
It is the term given to a number of different
methods of supplying water to the soil. Its purpose is
to supply water at a time when growing crops need it
most.
“INSECT PESTS AND PLANT DISEASES AND THEIR
CONTROL”

Most insect pests and plant diseases attack and feed

on farm crops. If these plant enemies are allowed to prey

on croplands, they will destroy certain crops. However,

proper precautions can minimize loss.

For effective control of plant enemies, it is necessary

to know their mode of life and how they can be prevented
and controlled.

1. The chewing insects bite off portions of the plant,

chew them up, and swallow them. Cabbage worm,
bean pod borer, squash bug, tomato hornworm,
cutworm, and other forms of caterpillar belong to
this group. To destroy them, poison their food by
spraying a thin, uniform layer of an appropriate
insecticide all over the parts of the plants to be
protected.

2. The sucking insects have a tube like sucking

mouth. They do not bite off the portions of the plant
but they suck their food in liquid form. They insert
their mouth parts into the tissue of the leaf or stem
and suck the plant juice. Aphids, leafhopper, scale
insects, and mealy bugs belong to this group. They
are destroyed by spraying any agricultural insecticide
recommended for the control of insect pests.

Plant Diseases
Plant diseases are caused chiefly by fungi within the
tissue of the host plant. These fungi secure sustenance
from the plants on which they grow. They start to grow
and develop in the plants from which they secure their
nourishment. Fungal diseases can be controlled by
spraying or dusting with fungicide that will either prevent
germination of the spores or kill the germ before it enters
the tissues of the host plant.

“INTERCROPPING AND CROP ROTATION”

Intercropping is the growing of two or more crops

together in proximity on the same land. As a result, two or
more crops are managed at the same time. It differs from
crop rotation in which two or more crops are grown one
after the other. Both cropping systems have resulted in
increased farm production and profitability per unit land
area in selected crops. There are at least four types of
intercropping according to spatial arrangement.

1. Row intercropping — It is the growing of two or

more crops planted in rows. In farms grown to perennial
crops, annual crops like corn, rice, and pineapple are
commonly grown as intercrop between the rows of the
main crop. This strategy is an efficient way of maximizing
the use of farmland by utilizing vacant spaces while at the
same time, suppressing the growth of weeds during the
juvenile stage of the main crop.

(electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise) without prior written permission from the school.
East Negros Academy, Inc. Learning Module for EPP 5(Week 10-11) Page 10 of 15

2. Strip intercropping — It is the growing of two or

more crops together in strips wide enough to allow
separate production of crops using mechanical
implements, but close enough for the crops to interact. An
example is the simultaneous growing of six rows of corn
and 12 rows of soybean in alternating strips. This
particular example results in multiple row arrangement.

3. Mixed intercropping or mixed cropping — It is the

growing of two or more crops at the same time with no
distinct row arrangement.

(electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise) without prior written permission from the school.
East Negros Academy, Inc. Learning Module for EPP 5(Week 10-11) Page 11 of 15

4. Relay intercropping or relay cropping — It is a

system in which a second crop is planted into an existing
crop when it has flowered (reproductive stage) but before
harvesting. There is a minimum temporal overlap of two
or more crops. The relay crop should be fairly tolerant to
shade and trampling. Examples of relay crops are cassava,
cotton, sweet potato and corn, chickpea, lentil, and wheat
with upland rice.

Watering methods for growing vegetables:

1. Water the plants daily
2. Water the plants in the morning and afternoon only
3. Be careful on watering the plants so that it will not be
damage.
4. Avoid heavy watering so that the plant will not drown,
especially the new seedlings.
5. The holes used in the watering can must be small.

Plowing Methods for Vegetable Plants:

1. Cultivate the soil in the morning or in the afternoon.
2. Cultivate the soil around the plant to breathe its roots.
3. Make the soil cultivation moderate.
4. The soil should be dug shallowly especially in plants
with pine roots.

Ways to Apply Organic Fertilizer in Vegetable

Plants:
1. Mix organic fertilizer with soil
2. Fertilizer can be applied before planting, while planting,
or after planting.
3. Add fertilizer while the plant is small before it bears
fruit.
