Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Star Light, Star Bright!

Content Area/Grade(s): 2nd Grade- Earth & Space Science
Content Standard Summarized: Students will learn information about the characteristics of stars by asking
questions about their size and brightness and the size and brightness of the sun.
Technology Standard Addressed: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a
variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft PowerPoint

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☒ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students will choose to work individually or in groups of 2-3 to create an eBook. Their eBook can be as
creative and imaginative as they want while focusing on the characteristics of stars in space. English learners
will be allowed to write their story in Spanish and have closed captioning in both English and Spanish.
Students are given the choice to personalize their eBook presentation by drawing their own pictures, using
pictures from online, taking their own pictures, or however else they want to express their learning. Students
will be using tools that professionals use every day, and they will show persistence in creating their eBook and
overcoming obstacles by learning how the tools work. Student engagement will be heightened as they get to
choose how they want to create their eBook illustrations and use whatever characters they want to address
the standards. They will also be able to utilize their expression and communication through these tools as
they will record audio to read the eBook and use transition and animation tools to make the story come alive.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create an eBook that addresses the content and technology
standards above. I will activate students background knowledge by discussing the time patterns and objects in
the daytime and nighttime sky. I will show students my eBook creation along with other examples of eBooks. I
will extend learning to a higher level by asking students to record their own audio and include a question to
ask their peers at the end of the story that could solve a problem related to earth and space, which will
increase student critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The lesson will be concluded with review of the
size of the sun compared to other stars, and students will create a model that illustrates this.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
Student learning will be impacted through the use of professional tools that adults use. They will be working
with and learning how to best use these tools in multiple ways. Student learning will also be impacted
through learning the standards in a unique way that increases student engagement. Student will be allowed
to present their eBook creation to their classmates and parents, and they can provide feedback to each other.
Once permission is granted to publish student work outside of class, the eBooks will be posted on our school
website and on YouTube for anyone to view.
