Linguistics is the study of language, its form and its function. Words are arranged
in a certain order, and sometimes the beginnings and endings of the words are
changed to adjust the meaning. Linguistics is the study of all of this.

But this video is about Semantics. Semantics is a branch of linguistics. Like any
other branches, Semantics has a specific purpose. These are three things you may
not know about Semantics:

Number three: The study

Semantics alike any other branch of Linguistics, studies a certain part of the
language. Morphology, for example, studies the structure of words; and Syntax the
structure of sentences. Well, Semantics studies the meaning of language.
Language has a form and a function to convey meaning. These two elements
altogether are part of the process of the Speech circuit. Semantics deals with what
the coder and the decoder try to convey when they communicate.

Number two: Pragmatics relationship

Semantics is the study of meaning. It focuses on the relation between words,
phrases and other bits of language and on how these words and phrases connect
to the world. Pragmatics is similar, but it involves the study of how speakers of a
language use the language to communicate and accomplish what they want.
Pragmatics looks more at the relationship between speaker and listener which
allows assumptions to be made about the intended message, considering, for
example, the way context contributes to meaning. A classic example is where
someone is asked "Do you want some coffee?" Does the reply "Coffee will keep
me awake" mean yes or no? It depends whether the person wants to stay awake -
and the questioner will only understand the intended meaning if they know whether
the person wants to stay awake.

Number one: Semantics and its branches

Semantics is also the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning.
There are a number of branches and subbranches of semantics, including formal
semantics, which studies the logical aspects of meaning, such as sense, reference,
implication, and logical form, lexical semantics, which studies word meanings and
word relations, and conceptual semantics, which studies the cognitive structure of
meaning.
