A number of professors are concerned that their courses do not contribute to all of
the goals. For instance a course might address the international but not the ethical goal. How
do you think this problem should be dealt with in the appraisal system?
Ans. Performance appraisal is a process to evaluate employees overall performance and how
employees help to achieve these objectives. In the same sense performance appraisal is also
used to meet these objectives. As mentioned in the question that some objectives are not
fulfilled according to the professors. Performance appraisal system is used to deal with these
issues in the following ways:
As management by objectives is a method of achieving specific goals assigned by organizations
or teams. Because professors are concerned that only one goal is meet management by
objectives is one of the method to resolve this issue. By using this technique professors can set
specific targets and follow different kinds of activities and strategic plans to achieve those
targets. In example for instance if only international goal is the outcome of course under study
and not the ethical goal professors can achieve both goals by following different kinds of
strategic plans.
Another way to resolve this issue is through student feedback. Because students can evaluate
the course content and context this will also helpful for the teachers to judge whether the
course is delivering the same knowledge and focusing on the specific goal or not.
Along with these recommendations following strategies can also be proved to be helpful:
Aligning course content with daily activities to judge whether course is focusing on the
same outcome.
Direct communication with students to evaluate whether outcomes are meeting the
desired criteria.
Full participation of students is also necessary to achieve desired targets.
Professors should be accountable to the needs of department.
Document the problem which are faced by professors during teaching.
Give the professors an opportunity to discuss the problems with the higher
management.
Q.No. 2. Do you think students should be the raters in this appraisal system? What other
sources of appraisal would you recommend?
Ans. In my opinion students should be raters in performance appraisal system. Because
knowledge is delivered to the students and students execute the same which they have
learned. As performance appraisal is a two way communications process in which one
evaluates the
performance of other; in the same way it helps students and professors to discuss the
outcomes of study. It helps to establish a review to help professors to reduce biasness and
personal feelings that directly affects meeting the desired goal.
It helps teachers to understand what actions they should take to improve results. It also helps
teachers to understand what abilities do they require to improve or knowledge do they need to
attain in order to accomplish their goals.

This type of appraisal is involve in identifying and describing some specific events
where employee did well or wrong in the past.
All of the above sources of performance appraisal are helpful in the given scenario in which
case is discussed. Professors can be evaluated through all of the above sources of appraisal and
their performance for meeting the desired outcomes can be evaluated through these sources.
Q.No.3: A number of faculty are concerned that student ratings are only a popularity contest
and do not indicate teaching quality or amount of learning. Do you agree?
Ans. I do not agree with this statement. There are many reasons to disagree with this
statement.
First of all student’s learning is the outcome of input which professors deliver in the form of
knowledge. If students are not attaining the desired knowledge it means there are flaws in
teaching style. So student rating is necessary in this context.
Secondly students are much more affected by teaching methodology and skills of teacher. If
teacher’s way of delivering knowledge is not good students will not get to the point learning
outcomes.
Students can face different issues in class related to environment, team collaboration, mutual
learning and intellectual learning. The environment of class depends mostly on teachers and
their way of communication. So student’s feedback is very important to resolve these issues.
Students rating is also necessary because it helps teachers to judge what students experience
and what they experience from their instructors.
Students want teachers to give clear understanding of student requirements and this can only
be done through evaluation of teachers.
Student’s evaluation helps teachers to understand how teachers meet student’s expectations.
Teachers can get idea of what their students think. Teachers can judge that what he is actually
doing and how he/she is fulfilling the requirements of students.
This can also give teachers an idea about what they can fix right now, straight from the minds of
people who sit in front of them all day long.
