Activity 2.2
INSTRUCTIONS: The following are the approaches to assessment. Interview your
cooperating teacher in describing each one of them.
Approaches Description
Insights:
To begin with, observation in the class of our cooperating teacher was very commendable as
it gave me a lot of important things I needed. In furtherance of that, I learned necessary things
just like the significance of the assessment in students' learning and what are the things I need
in order to have a high quality assessment that will help the students' learning. Moreover, I
also acquire important knowledge of what are different purposes of the assessment. Before, I
thought that it is just there to measure if the students are learning very well or not but now, I
realized that there is a lot of things why assessments are significant. In addition, through
interviewing my cooperating teacher, I got to add more information to what I already knew
about the approaches of Assessment such as Assessment For, Of, and As Learning. All things
considered, this observation was fun and informative as I got to learn many things that I
could use in the future.
1. Teachers must be competent in knowing whether the assessment tasks are suitable to
the grade level of their students.
2. Teachers must be competent in aligning the assessment tasks to the learning outcomes
of the lesson.
3. Teachers must be competent to observe what are the interests or skills of the students
to have a differentiated assessment tasks.
4. Teachers must be competent to use or practice high quality assessment for student
learning.
5. Teachers must be competent in giving feedback as it is also crucial in terms of giving
assessment tasks.
EPISODE 3
Activity 3.2
INSTRUCTIONS: Interview your cooperating teacher or other teachers in your
cooperating school handling different grade levels. Ask the following questions:
1. In assessing your students in different levels, are you using the same tasks? Why or
Why not?
The tasks I use may vary depending on their needs and capabilities. For the reason that I am
handling diverse learners. Some of them can easily understand and do things related to the
topics discussed, while others are not.
2. How do you differentiate the assessment tasks you use in different levels?
I read first what is suggested in the curriculum, then I observe my classes to determine if the
suggested tasks are applicable to the levels they are at, their interests, and what activities
might engage them the most.
3. Why should you use different tasks at different levels?
For the reason that students learn differently in various ways, and of course, different levels
have different competencies and objectives to be achieved.
As learning starts with knowing, various assessments can greatly impact the students’
curiosity and eagerness to learn new things and concepts. Assessments can also be a great
help for them to be engaged and motivated, which will result in a good and effective learning
process.
Assessment Tasks: Assessed the students through group quiz. The group quiz is called, "Deal
or No Deal". They must decide whether they can answer the question or pass it to the other
members.
1. Is the assessment used by the CT aligned to the intended learning outcomes and
teaching and learning actd? Why or why not.
It is evident that the assessment used by the teacher is aligned to the intended learning
outcomes and teaching and learning activities. For the reason that the assessment task
is through group quiz and the content of the quiz was also about the ICT National
Policies that the teacher discussed. This group quiz reflect the three learning outcomes
given by the teacher before the lesson and the teaching and learning activities which
is also about the topic.
2. Is the assessment tasks used by the CT is suitable to the students' grade level? Why ot
Why not?
The assessment task used by the teacher was indeed suitable for the first year
students. The group quiz was done with a twist which is through a game called "Deal
Or No Deal". The first year student were familiar with it and it is not that hard to play
or answer in their level.
3. In choosing the assessment tasks to be used, what factors the teacher should consider?
Based on our cooperating teacher, it is necessary to first observe your class to know
what are the assessment tasks that are suitable to their levels. Additionally, it is a must
to consider if its aligned to the curriculum and learning outcomes. Lastly, the teacher
must consider the interests and what will make the students engage the most.
1. Make sure to have a differentiated assessment tasks that are aligned to the
interests, skills, and learning styles of the students.
2. The assessment method or strategies must be aligned to the intended learning
outcomes and teaching and learning activities.
3. The assessment task must be suitable and appropriate to the grade level of the
students.
4. Make sure that the assessment are as authentic as possible and is fair to
everyone.
5. Clear concepts and instructions, criteria, and purpose of the assessment must
be given beforehand.
Initially, the classroom observation in the class discussion of our cooperating teacher is
indeed a highly beneficial as it provided me with a important and valuable insights that is
essential in this episode. Previously, my understanding of assessments is I thought that it is
just there to measure if the students are learning very well or not but now, I realized that there
is a lot of things why assessments are significant not just to learners but also to teachers. As
such, this observation broadened my view on the significance of assessments in teaching and
learning process as well as the considerations in making the assessments. Furthermore, I
found the observation as experience that are both engaging and enlightening as it feed me
various knowledge and methods that I can apply in my future teaching practices.
