Malaysia Light Rail Transit (LRT) traction network is fed by 750 V DC system. A
rectifier transformer (zigzag transformer) and a twelve-pulse traction rectifier are
the main equipment to step down and rectify the AC power. In order to eliminate
the bulky rectifier transformer in the conventional design, this paper presents a
feasibility study on a two-stage power conversion system using purely power
electronics converters. The proposed system consists of a six-pulse controlled
rectifier, low-pass filter and a buck converter. The six-pulse controlled rectifier
will step down and rectify the 33 kV AC grid. The generated DC voltage will be
filtered and fine-tuned to reach the desired DC voltage level using a 2 kHz buck
converter. The design of the proposed system will be fully discussed and simulated
using MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results with full analysis are enclosed.

d.) Rectifier and Feeder Circuit Breaker (DC Switchgear):
The 1500VDC Switchgear shall be type-tested, similar or better to the existing
equipment in LRT Line 2 and in accordance to the standards stated in this PPSP.

POWER SUPPLY AND OVERHEAD CATENARY SYSTEM
Power Supply System includes all equipment needed to convert AC 34.5kV utility
power into DC 1500V traction power supply to the trains and into AC 480 V
auxiliary power supply to station and Depot facilities. DC 1500V power supply is
derived at Rectifier Substation (RSS) along the main line, and then distributed via
wayside positive feeder cables and disconnect switches to Overhead Contact
System (OCS) and via OCS to the trains. DC current from the trains returns to
RSS, via the running rails and interconnecting negative cables. 6-RSSs are
provided along the main line at the following locations:
RSSs also provide auxiliary power for transit facilities. They produce AC 6.6kV
power which is distributed to all stations where it is stepped down at 11 station
substations to derive the required AC 480V supply. The maintenance building in
the depot is supplied from RSS#6 at 34.5kV converted directly to AC 480V supply
at the workshop substation.

2.5.5.2 DC Power Supply and Distribution Network
The trains to be adopted will be designed to operate at 1,500V DC and supplied via
an Overhead Contact System (OCS). To provide traction supply to the OCS,
Traction Power Substations (TPSS) will be established at a number of selected
passenger stations. At each selected passenger stations, there will be two rectifier
substations which supply traction power to the two tracks. Each DC traction power
substation will include a rectifier transformer, a rectifier, DC switch board,
negative busbar and the associated protection equipment. The rectifier transformers
will be fed from one of the two 33kV substations at that passenger station.

TRAINS
The rail coaches are also air and noise pollution-free and run on electricity from
MERALCO. 34.5 kilovolts AC Power is provided at the eight traction
electrification substations at North Avenue, Kamuning, Santolan Road, Ortigas
Avenue, Guadalupe, Ayala Avenue, Magallanes Avenue and Taft Avenue.
