INTRODUCTION
Music has a profound effect on everyone. From the soothing tones of
classical music to the peppy beats of jazz, it has the ability to change
our mood. But does music affect plants, too?

We all know how important plants are to our life. Plants are the main
source of food for human beings. Plants are autotrophs that is unlike
animals they prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis.
Sunlight the ultimate source of energy is absorbed by these autotrophs
and converted into stored food This stored food passes down the food
chain and finally reaches the decomposers. They absorb the
carbondioxide and lets out oxygen which is necessary for survival of
human beings.

Plants lack the ability to hear the sound as humans and most animals
do. Plants are relatively simple organisms that use the light energy to
conduct a photochemical reaction involving water and carbon
dioxide. This chemical reaction known as photosynthesis produces a
variety of simple and compound sugars such as starch and cellulose
that form the body of the plant.

Plants also lack the ability to comprehend, analyze and think because
they don't have a brain.

Although plants cannot hear and understand music, many

have studied the effects of music on plants. In this project we
will learn how that is possible
First lets know some uses of plants
Medicinal uses of plants
Some plants like Tulsi and Neem have been used as medicinal purpose for
many years .
These medicinal plants :
Boosts immunitEnhances mood
Expels cough from body
Cures many diseases, Benefits respiratory health etc…

Plant physiology
Plant physiology plays an important role in agriculture as it helps the
researches to study the behaviour of plants in different conditions of
wheather. It helps in genetic modification which is very important
branch of science.
the fieldof plant physiology includes the study of all the internal
activities of plants—those chemical and physical processes associated
with life as they occur in plants. This includes study at many levels of
scale of size and time. At the smallest scale are molecular interactions
of photosynthesis and internal diffusion of water, minerals, and
nutrients. At the largest scale are the processes of
plant development, seasonality, dormancy, and reproductive control.
Major subdisciplines of plant physiology include phytochemistry (the
study of the biochemistry of plants) and phytopathology. The scope of
plant physiology as a discipline may be divided into several major
areas of research.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am extremely thankful to my biology teacher mrs r.vasudha for her

guidance and support. This project wouldn’t have been possible
without her encouragement
I also thank our principal mrs Lakshmi arulalan, vice principal mrs
Chandra chandrashekaran. The knowledge which I have earned in the
past years is priceless.
Significance of the project

The main aim of this project is to create awareness about how

music, vibrations effect the growth of plants and what type of
music do plants respond.
Believe it or not, numerous studies have indicated that playing music
for plants really does promote faster, healthier growth
We can grow plants not only with the help of sunlight, good
soil, watering frequently and manures but also by playing
music to the plants .
Early people say that when we talk to the plant they receive
our vibrations and grow faster. A typical example is the
growth of money plant. But the fact to note is that plants do
not hear music/sound they feel it.
Effect of music on plant growth
We know plants don't have ears, so how can playing music for plants
help them grow?

Late studies have uncovered that audible sound stimulation

has an extraordinary potential to enhance plant development
and the quality of the product.
When it comes to understanding the effects of music on plant
growth, it appears that it isn’t so much about the “sounds” of the
music, but more to do with the vibrations created by the sound
waves. In simple terms, the vibrations produce movement in the
plant cells, which stimulates the plant to produce more nutrients.
Scientists even could find out the effect of vibrations caused by
barefoot dancing.
Several studies have looked at this question, specifically how music
effects plant growth.
But still the effect of music on plants has been a debatable topic.

The dielemma
researchers at the University of California aren’t so quick to jump to
conclusions about the effects of music on plant growth. They say that
so far there is no conclusive scientific evidence that playing music for
plants helps them grow, and that more scientific tests are needed
with rigorous control over factors such as light, water and soil
composition. Interestingly, they suggest that plants exposed to music
may thrive because they receive top-level care and special attention
from their caretakers.
RESEARCHES BY VARIOUS SCIENTISTS:

In 1962, Dr.T. C. Singh, head of the Botany Department at India's

Annamalia University, examined the effect of musical sounds on the
growth rate of plants. He found that a particular tye ofplants grew at a
rate that accelerated by 20% in height and 72% in biomass when
exposed to music. He initially experimented with classical music and
raga music played on flute, violin, harmonium. He found similar
effects .This was repeated with field crops using raga music played
through loud speakers .The size of these crops increased between 25-
60%.

Through conducting several experiments he concluded that ound of

violin had the greatest effect on the growth.

A Colorado greenhouse owner experimented with several types of

plants and various genres of music. She determined that plants
“listening” to rock music deteriorated quickly and died within a
couple of weeks, while plants thrived when exposed to classical
music.

Metabolism in plants can be greatly affected by music. Plants

are reported to behave differently to different music types and
frequency.
Sternheimer, a French physicist and musician, has framed melodies
that apparently help plants grow.

A researcher in Illinois was skeptical that plants respond positively to

music, so he engaged in a few highly controlled greenhouse
experiments. Surprisingly, he found that soy and corn plants exposed
to music were thicker and greener with significantly larger yields.
Sir Jagdish Chandra bose an Indian plant physiologist spent a lifetime
researching and studying the various environmental, and
responses of plants. He concluded that they react to the attitude with
which they are nurtured. He also found that plants are sensitive to
factors in the external environment, such as light, cold, heat, and
noise.

BOOKS;
in 1973 book The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird
wrote about the fascinating relationship between music and plants.
The Sound of Music and Plants, by Dorothy Retallack in 1973. According to
Retallack, the best music for plant growth is soothing, positive music. Plants don't
like harsh, heavy, angry or discordant sounds.Three or four hours of music is the
optimum amount, according to Retallack. Play plants music for longer than this and
the effects tend to always be negative, whatever style of music is played.

The Effect of Music on Seed

Development
Dr. T. C. Singh also discovered that seeds that were exposed to music and later
germinated produced plants that had more leaves, were of greater size, and had
other improved characteristics. It practically changed the plant's genetic
chromosomes!
How Can Plants Hear?
How could music affect plant growth if plants don't have ears? To explain how it may
work, let us look at how we humans receive and hear sound.

Sound is transmitted in the form of waves that travel through a medium, such as air
or water. The waves cause the particles in this medium to vibrate. When you switch
on your radio, the sound waves create vibrations in the air that cause your ear drum
to vibrate. This pressure energy is converted into electrical energy for the brain to
translate into what you understand as musical sounds.

In a similar manner, the pressure from sound waves create vibrations that could be
picked up by plants. Plants would not "hear" the music, they would feel the vibrations
of the sound wavwe

Type of music and their effect on plant growth

If plants don’t respond well to rock music, it isn’t because they “like” classical
better. However, the vibrations produced by loud rock music create greater
pressure that isn’t conducive to plant growth

Country music

In the experiment, country music seemingly had no effect on plant growth. Plants
exposed to country music had similar growth patterns to those that were exposed to
complete silence

Jazz music

jazz music had a beneficial effect on the plants’ growth, showing a much higher
growth rate than the plants exposed to country music.

Let’s take a look at Classical Music and Rock Music in regards to plant growth. In 1973, two
experiments were done. In one, the note F was played to a group of plants for 8 hours; another
group received the same note for 3 hours; the third group of plants was left silent. The first group
died in 2 weeks, and the second group ended up being much more healthy than the last group
(the silent group).
In the other experiment, one group of plants was exposed to classical music, while another group
was exposed to rock music. The results? The plants to which classical music was played grew
towards the speakers. Some of the plants even wrapped themselves around the speakers. The
group of plants that rock music was played to grew away from the speakers as if wishing to get
away from the sound and vibrations the rock music produced.
THE EXPERIMENT

AIM:to study the effect of music on the growth of two plants

to which one of them will be played music;here the plants are
ladies finger and chilli

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Two plants- ladies finger and chilli plant
Camera
Suitable environment for the growth of the plants
Adequate water supply
A speaker in which the music will be played

DURATION OF MUSIC PLAYED:

2 hours per day-one hour in the day and one hour during night

DURATION OF THE EXPERIMENT

4 months-from 2/8/2020 to 29/11/2021
Procedure: what I did?

2 seeds of the plants namely ladies finger and chilli was

planted on 2/8/2020 as shown in the below picture.

Both these plants were provided with equal amount of water

supply, same enivorenmental conditions .
The only difference was that one of the plant, that is,the ladies
finger plant was also provided with a soothing classical music
twice a day.Where as the chilli plant was not.
After 2 weeks,

As shown the ladies finger plant was grown and we could

see the seeds germinated while the chilli seeds hasn’t
started the germination. This was the first step where we
could conclude that music played some minute role in the
growth of the two plants
After one month

Few weeks later

After 2 months
RESULT
The ultimate conclusion of this experiment was that the plant
(ladies finger) which was provided with smooth classical
music had grown well and the number of its produce was 25
ladies finger
The chilli plant however did no show any improvement

From this it is clear that music played a role in the grwth of

plants.
