For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Community Engagement Solidarity and Citizenship Self-


Learning Module on Purposes of Community Actions: The Youth in Community
Building!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

RECAP
Before we proceed to the lesson proper try just a little review of the discussions
form module 17. The first topic that was discussed was about the marginalized
sector. What is a marginalized group? Why do you think marginalization happen in
a society?
Then the discussion centered on the organization of tribal communities in the
Philippines. What again is the name of that organization? Can you give any of its
programs or advocacies?

There are also two NGOs identified which cater to the welfare of the
disadvantaged children. What are those organizations? Can you compare the two in
terms of their advocacies?

I hope you are all set for the lessons in this module. So let’s get started!

LESSON

The youth as partners in community building


We can visualize the kind of society that we will have in the future by looking
at the youths we have today. If those who were born before them are the bearers of
light that will guide their way towards the future. These youths are our hope for a
brighter tomorrow.

As discussed in module 14, more than a quarter of our country’s population


is comprised of the young persons aged 15 to 29. This means closed to 30 million of
our population today are in the stage of finding their place in the society. They will
be our next economic managers, policy makers, scientist and innovators, community
organizers, safeguarding our freedom, protecting our environment and preserving
our culture in the near future.
But because of their young age they are vulnerable to many forms of social
menace that can potentially hamper their transformation into productive members
of the community. It is for this purpose that some concerned individuals are taking
the initiatives in ensuring a better life for the coming generations.

Basketball Without Borders (BWB)

BWB is a community outreach program of the National Basketball Association


of the United Sates. It uses sports to influence positive social change and bring hope
to kids who dreams of becoming a big name in sports. The NBA selects kids from
different parts of the globe aged 19 and below to participate in the training camp.
The training camp is conducted by selected coaches and basketball superstars form
both the NBA and the WNBA.

The Performing Arts and Recreation Center Foundation

PARC is a registered non-stock, non-profit organization that commits itself to


the cause of society and culture through performing arts. Its goal is to create social
and cultural impact through its programs on community development, artist
empowerment and youth development.
In the area of youth development the foundation helped transform
the lives of underprivileged children and youth through its flagship
program called “PARCaralan.” The program offers free artistic life skills
training coupled with
educational assistance and
career opportunities.
Furthermore, the beneficiaries
of the program also take up
values formation and
character-building workshops.
They also undergo cultural

appreciation of arts and help
them set ambition in the field

ACTIVITIES

Self-Assessment (How can I share?) Ask yourself this question, “what do I have
that I can share with the disadvantaged youths in my community? With the help of
the table you will try to figure out the talents or abilities that you have. In the second
column you will indicate how you can share what you have to the disadvantage
youths and in the last column specify what they will gain from that. You can get 5
points for each column.

WRAP-UP

The discussions in this module centered on the importance of protecting and


promoting the welfare of the youths. There are numerous organizations that advocate
for youth development. Since youth development covers diverse interests and
activities thus the multitude of modalities offered by the NGOs.
Aside from sports development what else do you think the BWB is advocating
on? Are familiar with the program of BWB? How about the advocacies of the PARC
can you tell something about it? How are you going to compare PARC from the
Kariton Klasrum in terms of programs and beneficiaries?

VALUING

Each of us has an important role to play in the community development


process. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young you can be relevant. That is exactly
the reason behind this subject. To inform you of your role and help you discover your
part in the development process.

I hope you are devoting some of your precious time reflecting on how much
you’ve gone already in this stage of your life. Although you are in a quarantine and
in effect not allowed to go out it shouldn’t reduce you into irrelevant member of the
community.
Earlier you were asked to do a self-reflection and to figure out how you can
contribute to the cause of the disadvantage youths. While staying in your home for
a long period of time, hopefully you’ve done your part in keeping stability in your
household. But what about the people outside your home, in your community or
your circle of friends? Have you tried doing something to help them cope with
challenges during these trying times?
