Successful Filipino Entrepreneurs
Some of the most successful Filipino entrepreneurs started small but worked hard to
grow their business.
From Rags to Richest
1. Henry Sy – Founder of SM Group of Companies
- As a young boy he helped his father run a shoe store. After World War 2
came, he took the opportunity to earn money by buying and selling from
American toy soldiers. He then opened his own shoe store and was
hardworking, self-confident, and persistent in pursuing his goals. He first
named his business Shoe Mart.

2. Tony Tan Caktiong – Founder of Jollibee

- He first ventured into an ice cream franchise business and later offered
sandwiches, fries, and fried chicken. He was persistent, hard-working, and
hands-on in his business. He later called his business Jollibee.
3. Socorro “Coring” Ramos – National Bookstore
- Socorro Ramos entered the publishing and retail industry by working as a
salesgirl at a bookstore. At the age of 19, she opened National Book Store
in Escolta with her husband with a capital of P200, selling books and school
supplies to students. At that time, Manila was under the control of the
Japanese, who imposed censorship on books and periodicals. To augment
their earnings, she and her husband resorted to selling other items like
candles and soaps. In the 1970s, National Book Store became popular by
selling reprinted versions of foreign textbooks for 75% lesser than the
actual price. Parents and students loved the idea of being able to purchase
such books for lower costs.

4. Ricky Reyes –
- Reyes - In his early years, he worked as a floor sweeper in a beauty salon
and acquired skills in pedicure and hair cutting. In 1975, Reyes opened his
first salon in San Juan with a few savings and later opened again three more
shops in Manila. In 1985, Reyes opened the first mall salon at SM North
Edsa. This venture started with his friendship with Henry Sy, known as the
mall tycoon in the country.
Over the years, Reyes did not stop exploring the best technology in beauty
care in his salon. He is friendly with his employees and shares his blessings
with them through his Ricky Reyes Foundation.
5. Mariano Que – Mercury Drug
- P100. That was all Mariano Que had in his pocket after World War II. An
employee of a drugstore prior to the war, Que knew that Filipinos would need
the “miracle” drug sulfathiazole, believed to cure many (if not all) sorts of
diseases and illnesses. He saw an opportunity to help his countrymen by
buying the bottle from a peddler in Bambang St. He then sold these tablets
(which he knew was genuine sulfathiazole thanks to the ‘W’ on the tablets)
per piece to make it more affordable. After making a profit, he was able
purchase other medicines and a pushcart so he can sell his medicines to the
public. He continued selling medicines off of his pushcart until he was able to
save enough to put up the first Mercury Drug store on March 1 along
Bambang St.
