Free Vibration of an Undamped Torsional System

If a rigid body oscillate (Angular) about a specific reference axis, the resulting
motion is called torsional vibration
The displacement of the body is measured in terms of a angular coordinate
The restoring moment may be due to the torsion of an elastic member or to the
unbalanced moment of a force or couple
Free Vibration of an Undamped Torsional System
(cont’d)

Considering a disc mounted on the shaft as shown in

fig, resulting torque is given by

GI o
Mt = 
l

Where G = shear modulus and I0 = polar moment of

inertia of cross section of shaft and is given by

Here shaft acts as a torsional spring with spring

constant
Free Vibration of an Undamped Torsional System:
Equation of Motion
The equation of the angular motion of the disc about its axis can be derived
by using Newton’s second laws

By comparing above equation and free vibration for translational system,

equation for natural frequency can be derived as:

Hence time period and frequency is given by:

Free Torsional Vibration
Important aspects of this system
If the cross section of the shaft supporting the disc is not circular, an
appropriate torsional spring constant is to be used
The polar mass moment of inertia of a disc is given by
ρ = mass density;
h = thickness of disc;
D = diameter;
W = weight of disc and
g = acceleration due to
gravity
The general solution

Using initial condition for displacement θ and

velocity θ’ be θ0 and θ’0 at t = 0. Constant are given as:

Rayleigh’s Energy Method

We will use energy method to find the natural frequencies of a

single degree of freedom systems
The principle of conservation of energy, in the context of an
undamped vibrating system, can be restated as

Subscript 1 denote the time when the mass is passing through its
static equilibrium position (U1=0 (Potential Energy))
Subscript 2 indicate the time corresponding to the maximum
displacement of the mass (T2=0 (Kinetic Energy))

If the system is undergoing harmonic motion, then T1and U2 denote

the maximum values
