Grammar Block Class 1 Present Simple and Present Continuous

Class 1. Present Continuous vs. Present Simple

Main aim: enable Ss to understand the difference between the present continuous and the present
simple, and use these two tenses in controlled and freer practices.

Stages Procedure Form of work Timing

Warm up/ Ice Find someone who… Give each student a copy of the MA/GW 7+2+1
breaker worksheet. Students ask each other the present simple
and present continuous yes/no questions from the
worksheet. When a student finds someone who answers
'Yes, I do' or 'Yes, I am' to a question, the student writes
down their name.

Do you make questions and ask your partners? (yes)

Do you write names of your partners if their answer is


“Yes”? (yes)

When everyone has finished, divide Ss into groups

cards with actions which he/she needs to show without
speaking. Ss in groups start showing their actions. The
people watching the mimes have to make a Present
Continuous sentence to describe the action. S who says
the right sentence first takes the card. S who has more
cards wins. Every group has one winner. 1st example
together.
