Soil Investigation is best described as a means to go underground, determining the types of soil strata
(soil mechanics) at a particular point. The data collected will be platforms to determine the end bearing
capacity or the frictional strength of the soil at that particular point which will be translate to the
foundation design. The method use to check (test) the soil strata are as described below:
a. Tower locations are identified and the route angles verified. The foundation data is confirmed.
b. Equipment is checked and verified adequate and reliable.
c. Permit, if required, is still valid.
a. The centre of the tower is identified by checking the back and front angel of the route.
b. The bisection of the tower is calculated, and the tower legs are identified.
c. From the centre of the tower and using the foundation data, the centre of the foundation pits are
marked.
This method is done by striking the hammers of the probe against the metal rod attach to the hemmer.
The striking blow count will be log at every 0.3m interval as the rod penetrates below ground level. The
test will be terminated once achieving 400 blows per 0.3m or when reaching a maximum penetration
of 10m below ground level. Soil strata's and the underground water table will be recorded throughout
the test.
This method is to bore down below ground using a rotary wash boring machine which is mechanical
operated with a water pump attach, a metal pipe casing, a smaller pipes with drilling bits and taking
soil samples throughout the boring processes. Soil sample will be taken out of the bore hole in a 0.5m
metal tube at every 1.5m interval to determine the type of soil at that particular point. Samples are

collected by hammering a mechanism call the SPT hammer on hard ground condition and blow count
are recorded or using a thin metal tube press down on soft ground with the metal tube attach at the
end of the metal rod. Soil strata, underground table and soil samples are taken for analysis.
