COLETTE
BONJOUR MES AMI
BIENVENUE À PARIS
WELL, ACTUALLY SEVERAL MILES WEST
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
Although each of the world’s countries would like to dispute this fact, we French know
the truth; the best food in the world is made in France. The best food in France is made
is Paris, and the best food in Paris, some say, is made by Chef Auguste Gusteau.
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
4
(An image of the restaurant; Gusteau’s, is projected onto the background as the
famous chef himself, GUSTEAU, enters. Smiling and waving.)
GUSTEAU
He doesn’t cook, but he could. You know what I always say?
(Numerous CHEFS enter each holding a copy of the cookbook, holding various
poses with GUSTEAU as if they’re doing a photoshoot.)
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
Gusteau’s restaurant is the toast of Paris, booked five months in advance, and his
dazzling ascent to the top of Fine French Cuisine has made his competitors envious. He
is the youngest Chef ever to achieve a five star rating. Chef Gusteau’s cookbook
“Anyone Can Cook!” has climbed to the top of the bestseller list.
GUSTEAU
ANYONE CAN COOK, ANYONE CAN COOK
JUST GET UP, WITH NO DELAYS
CHEF 1
ANYONE CAN COOK, SOON YOU’LL GET THE HOOK
CHEF 2
AND THEN YOU CAN AMAZE

CHEF 3 & 4
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-

AND YOU COULD EVEN WRITE A BOOK
SONG END
(GUSTEAU and CHEFS leave as REMY, the blue, cooking rat, enters center
stage. A spotlight only on him.)
REMY
(To audience.)
This is me. I think it’s apparent that I need to rethink my life a little bit. What's my
problem? First of all, I’m a rat.
(One by one, the projected rats die by the ways REMY mentioned, before
disappearing.)
Second, I have a highly developed taste of taste and smell. Here let me show you.
EMILE (OFFSTAGE)
Remy? Where are you little brother?
REMY
(To audience.)
Speak of the devil.
(Calling out.)
I’m over here!
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
7
(EMILE, Remy’s bigger brother, enters.)
EMILE
Hey little brother! Dad is calling the colony to gather the food…
(EMILE notices the piece of cake sticking out of REMY’S pocket.)
What is that?
(Before REMY can say anything, EMILE gets nosy and takes it out, sniffs it, and
takes a bite.)
EMILE
Remy what were you doing in there? You could have gotten you and the rest of the
colony killed!
REMY
… cooking.
EMILE
Cooking!? Remy, we are rats. We do not cook, humans cook, rats don’t.
(The scene suddenly lights up, revealing the attic scene. Many RATS are
scattered about.)
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-

SONG END
DJANGO (OFFSTAGE)
(Blows a whistle.)
Alright, playtimes over gang. Back to work.
REMY
(To audience.)
That voice belongs to my dad, the leader of our clan. Unlike my brother Emile, he is
never impressed.
(The RATS scatter away, leaving only REMY, EMILE, as DJANGO, their dad,
enters.)
DJANGO
That includes you two. Get to work.
EMILE
Y- yes sir!
(Exits. REMY follows, but DJANGO stops him.)
DJANGO
Wait, Remy. Come here son. Real quick.
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
11
REMY
A cake of some sort?
DJANGO
No not that. This. You. You’re supposed to be helping gather food. But instead you’re
running about doing god knows what. You did this last time too.
REMY
You call what they’re gathering “food”? It’s disgusting.
DJANGO
Food is fuel, you get picky about what you put in the tank, then your engine is gonna
die. Just eat your garbage.
REMY
We’re thieves dad, and were stealing, let’s face it: garbage! If we do steal, why not steal
the good stuff in the kitchen? Where there’s no trash?
DJANGO
You know the rules. Stay out of the kitchen, away from the humans. It’s dangerous! You
know what happened to your mother.
REMY
But why don’t we try?
DJANGO
Oh Remy, just listen to me.
REMY
But dad-
DJANGO
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
12
Just listen…
(He goes to eat it, REMY sniffs the air and suddenly, in a panic, runs and smacks
it out of DJANGO’S hand.)
REMY
Woah, woah don’t eat that!!!
DJANGO
What’s going on here?
(REMY sniffs the air walking over to a box with a cloth covering it. He uncovers it,
revealing a giant case of rat poison. The other RATS gasp.)
RATS
Rat poison!?
REMY
That could have killed you dad! This is what I’m talking about, the good food is in the
kitchen. Where nothing is poisoned?
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
13
DJANGO
You know the rules, Remy.
REMY
Then what are we gonna do?
DJANGO
EVEN I WON’T DENY YOUR AMBITION
YOUR POWERFUL SNOUT IS YOUR DRIVE
SO LISTEN TO MY PROPOSITION…
REMY
(To audience. Annoyed.)
So from that day on, he’s made me the poison checker.
(REMY sits as a line of RATS holding various decomposing food for REMY to
smell. He answers bored and tired.)
DJANGO
TAKE IT FROM ME I’M YOUR CONFIDANTE
FINDING THE PIECE DE RESISTANCE, AMONG THE CESSPIT
RATS
I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHO COULD WANT MORE THAN THIS?
DJANGO
HOW FREE YOU WILL FEEL
WHEN YOU FINALLY FIND OUT
DJANGO
AND YOU THERE YOUNG REMY, ARE YET TO FIND OUT
REMY
Oh dad...
(DANCE BREAK.)
RATS
NOUS VIVONS POUR LES ORDURES
LES ORDURES Ç’EST NOTRE VIE
DJANGO
SO KEEP YOUR NOSE UP AND TREAD LIGHTLY
WE DON’T WANT TO BE CAUGHT UNAWARES
WE TAKE WHAT IS OUR WHEN WE WANT IT
IT’S NOT STEALING IF NOBODY KNOWS WE’RE THERE
DJANGO
WHY BE DOWNHEARTED WHEN WE’RE BETTER OFF
FINDING THE GOOD IN THE GARBAGE
THE RIPE IN THE ROT
THE DECAYING GARNISH IS OUR “CHERRY ON TOP!”
RATS
(THERE’S NO ROOM FOR DOUBT)
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
15
DJANGO
CAUSE THAT’S WHAT THE LIFE OF A RAT…
SONG END
REMY
(To audience.)
I know I’m supposed to hate humans. But, there's something about them. They don’t
just survive. They discover, they create, I mean just look at what they do with food!
(The TV [facing the audience] turns on. REMY watches with excitement)
GUSTEAU (OFFSTAGE)
Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell. There is excellence all
around you. You need only be aware to stop and savor it.
(From the food bowl, REMY takes a small piece of cheese and strawberry. He
takes a bite of the cheese.)
_#4B - Flavors__________________________________________________________
REMY
(To audience. Colorful lights dance around as he savors the flavor of the food.)
Gusteau was right. Each flavor was totally unique.
(He takes a bite of the strawberry, more lights dance around.)
But, combine one flavor with another; and something new was created!
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
16
(He takes a big bite of the two of the foods together, the color lights dance
around with excitement. GUSTEAU speaking on the TV turns REMY’S attention back to
the TV.)
GUSTEAU (OFFSTAGE)
Great cooking is not for the faint of heart. You must be imaginative, strong-hearted, you
must try things that may not work. And you must not let anyone define your limits
because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul. What I say is true,
anyone can cook, but only the fearless can be great.
REMY
(Smiling)
Pure poetry.
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
But it was not to last…
REMY
What?
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
Gusteau’s lost one of it’s five stars…
(The reflection projection of Gusteau’s logo reappears, one of its five illuminated
stars flickers out. REMY stares, wide-eyed.)
(EGO, a tall, dark-eyes, stern food critic enters the side of the stage. The lights
dimly and eerily illuminates him.)
EGO
SO YOU THINK YOU’VE GOT THE SKILLS?
THE DRIVE TO THRIVE IN THE KITCHEN?
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
17
TO SERVE THIS DIRTY TO ME EXPECTING MY GOOD WORD?
PLEASE, MY PALETTE IS RESERVED FOR ONLY MICHELIN
SONG END
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
It was a severe blow to Gusteau…
(BAM! A loud noise is heard offstage, several footsteps follow along with a
knock.)
SKINNER (OFFSTAGE)
(Concerned.)
Monsieur Gusteau? Are you alright?
(Suddenly panicked.)
Call an ambulance!
(Several voices of the chefs are heard. All concerning for the state of their
beloved chef.)
TV HOST (OFFSTAGE)
… and the great Chef died shortly afterward, which, according to tradition, meant the
loss of another star.
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
18
(The reflection projection of Gusteau’s logo reappears, another star flickered out.
REMY stares, terrified.)
REMY
(In disbelief.)
Gusteau, is dead!?
(Suddenly, the TV turns off. A giant shadow of an old lady looms above REMY.
Him staring up at her, frozen in fear. DJANGO enters, running.)
DJANGO
Remy! What are you doing here? You know you’re not supposed to! Come before anyo-
_#5B - Disaster!_________________________________________________________
(DJANGO sees the giant shadow looming above them both. The old lady gives
out a yelp, the sounds of a shotgun being loaded is heard. DJANGO blows his whistle.)
DJANGO
Evacuate! Everyone get out now!
(Several RATS scatter everywhere, terrified. The loud shots of a shotgun rings
throughout the room as REMY tries to keep a hold of his dad through the crowd, only for
them to be separated in a caos.)
REMY
(Calling out.)
Dad!
DJANGO
Remy! Just get out!
(REMY ducks to the ground as a final shotgun blast fills the room with smoke and
debris. The RATS are gone, it’s completely silent. After a few moments REMY gets up,
the smoke clears revealing he has somehow fallen into a sewer.)
______________________________________________________________________
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-

SCENE FOUR : SEWER
(REMY sits down, there's just enough lights seeping through to shine onto him.
He gives a sigh.)
REMY
(To audience.)
A waited. For a sound. A voice? A sign? Something?
(REMY puts his hands on his stomach as it lets out a loud growl, he hides his
face in his hands, presumably crying. When suddenly a soft light fills the room as
GUSTEAU enters.)
GUSTEAU
If you are hungry, go up and look around Remy. Why do you wait around and mope?
REMY
I’ve just lost my family, and my friends. Probably forever.
GUSTEAU
Well how do you know?
REMY
Well I-
(What is he doing?)
You are not even real. Why am I talking to you?
GUSTEAU
(Shrugs.)
I am a figment of your imagination, and you lost your family and your friends. You are
lonely?
REMY
And you’re dead.
GUSTEAU
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
20
Ah, but that is no match for wishful thinking. If you focus on what you’ve left behind you
will never be able to see what lies ahead.
REMY
(Confused, tired.)
What does that even mean?
GUSTEAU
Just shush.
THEY’LL PRAISE YOU, OH RATATOUILLE
EVEN THOUGH RIGHT NOW, IT MAY NOT SEEM
REMY
(Sarcastic.)
You’re being real helpful. And this makes no sense.
GUSTEAU
THE WORLD MAY TRY, TO CRUSH AND BREAK YOU
BUT DON’T YOU CRY, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO
CAUSE’ SOON YOU’LL SEE, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING
EVEN IF, YOU’RE JUST A LITTLE RAT
REMY
“ANYONE CAN COOK”
IF ANYONE IS SOMEONE WHO HAS LEGS AND LOOKS
THE WAY THAT THEY SHOULD
GUSTEAU
YOU’RE REMY THE RATATOUILLE
THE RAT WHO CHANGED THE RULES
THEY’LL PRAISE YOU, OH RATATOUILLE
YOU’LL MAKE THOSE DIRTY HUMANS LOOK LIKE FOOLS!
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
21
REMY
(Having a glimpse of hope.)
I’M REMY THE RATATOUILLE
EVEN THOUGH THAT DON’T MAKE SENSE
THEY’LL PRAISE ME, OH RATATOUILLE
I COULD BEND THE RULES AND BREAK THE FENCE
GUSTEAU
SO, GET ON YOUR FEET,
GET UP AND LOOK AROUND, DON’T MISS A BEAT
DON’T MAKE NO DELAYS
REMY
(REMY jumps to his feet, happy again.)
I’M REMY THE RATATOUILLE
THE RAT OF ALL THEIR DREAMS
THEY’LL PRAISE ME, OH RATATOUILLE
MAY THE WORLD REMEMBER MY NAME!
SONG END
GUSTEAU
-RATATOUILLE THE MUSICAL-
22
Now go up, and look around!
(GUSTEAU exits, REMY looks up at the light, hesitates for a moment, and exits
as the scene fades to black. We hear sounds of REMY scattering all around the theatre
until the lights fade back on showing a rooftop overlooking a beautiful night time Paris
city sky.)
______________________________________________________________________
SCENE FIVE : PARIS CITY
(The eiffel tower glows in the distance as REMY enters, hopping onto the roof
and gushes at the amazing view.)
REMY
(In disbelief.)
Paris? All this time I’ve been underneath Paris? It’s beautiful.
(The sign for Gusteau’s restaurant lights up from the darkness, it’s three stars
glistening bright and proudly. GUSTEAUS’ face on the sign lights up as if it’s speaking.)
GUSTEAU
The most beautiful.
REMY
Gusteaus? Your restaurant? You let me to your restaurant!
GUSTEAU
It seems as if I had, yes! Here it is! I have led you to it!
REMY
(Excited.)
I have to see this!
(REMY hops off the roof, exiting. Gusteaus’ face gives a wink to the audience.
The scene goes to black.)
