    World War 1 was a global war from 1914-1918 that involved most of Europe and some parts of Asia and Africa. It started after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and involved two main factions - the Allied forces of Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan and France against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. Some key battles included the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the United States entered the war in 1917. Over 17 million people died and 20 million were wounded by the end of World War 1 in 1918.
