The document outlines inspection procedures for magnetic chip detectors in aircraft engines and accessory gearboxes to check for metallic particles that could indicate component wear.

Inspecting the magnetic chip detectors is done to check for any metallic particles that may have collected, which could indicate potential issues requiring further investigation or component rejection.

If metallic flakes from a gear are found during inspection of the magnetic chip detector, the accessory gearbox must be rejected.

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE DURING OR

AFTER AN ENGINE OPERATION. THE ENGINE PARTS STAY HOT
FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE HOURS AFTER THE ENGINE STOPS.
THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.

WARNING: BE CAREFUL IF YOU MUST DO WORK ON HOT COMPONENTS. USE

APPROVED GLOVES AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. IF YOU DO NOT
DO THIS, YOU CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PEOPLE.

(2) Examine the end surface of the magnetic chip−detector for the types of particle that
follow:
− Build debris (this is unwanted material that accidentally stayed in the engine
during assembly. It can look the same as gear or steel seal material)
− Magnetic fines (these are very small steel particles. When you remove the oil,
they show as matt, hair−like slivers. As the engine wears (this is usual), it
makes magnetic fines which are permitted. Bearing skid can also make
magnetic fines but this shows during analysis)
− Metallic flakes (these come from bearings and gear teeth. Ball bearing and
ball−bearing track flakes are usually almost circular with radial cracks. Roller
bearing and roller−bearing track flakes are usually almost rectangular in shape.
When the ball or roller bearing flake is clean, the shiny side is much brighter
than other types of flake. The shiny side also has small scratches which go
across each other. Gear teeth flakes are shiny and of an irregular shape. They
are usually thicker and not as bright as ball or roller bearing flakes)
− Metallic chips (these are very thick flakes or pieces of metal that usually have
one smooth machined surface)
− Gear tooth fragments (these are the corner pieces of gear teeth).
− Hairs (these are fine strands of metal which come from permitted wear of the
piston rings in the main engine bearings of the front bearing chamber)

(3) To clean the particles on the magnetic chip−detector, put the end of the magnetic
chip−detector into a container of clean jet fuel, then use a spray of degreaser. Do
this again and again until the particles are clean (TASK 12−21−00−910−801).

NOTE: Be careful not to remove particles from the magnetic chip−detector when
you clean it.

Do not use a metal container.

(4) Use a binocular microscope or magnifying glass (X20 magnification) and examine
the particles on the magnetic chip−detector as follows:

NOTE: Record the particles that you find on the magnetic chip−detector.

(a) If you find build debris, and the engine has not more than 50 hours runtime
since new, accept it.

Nov 26/2014
GL 6000 AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL − PART II

(2) Examine the end surface of the accessory−gearbox magnetic chip−detector for the
types of particle that follow:

(a) If you find build debris, and the engine has not more than 50 hours runtime
since new, accept it.

(b) If you find build debris, and the engine has more than 50 hours runtime, you
must identify the debris as follows:

1 Install a clean magnetic chip−detector (EMM TASK 79−21−04−400−801).

EFFECTIVITY: ALL

2 Dry motor the engine for two minutes (TASK 71−00−00−866−804).

3 Do the detailed inspection of the pressure filter element (EMM TASK

79−21−02−220−801).

4 Do the detailed inspection of the scavange strainer (EMM TASK

79−21−03−220−801).

5 Remove and examine the magnetic chip−detector (EMM TASK

79−21−04−000−801).

6 If you find debris in the pressure filter, the scavange strainers, or on the
magnetic chip−detector, clean the debris.

7 If you find debris on the magnetic chip−detector after the two minute dry
motor, refer to Rolls−Royce Deutschland, Service Engineering.

(c) If you find magnetic fines that would less than thinly cover an area of up to
0.50 sq in (322.58 sq mm), accept them.

(d) If you find magnetic fines that would more than thinly cover an area of up to
0.50 sq in (322.58 sq mm), reject the engine.

(e) If you find metallic flakes and they are identified as bearing or gear material,
refer to Rolls−Royce Deutschland, Service Engineering.

(f) If you find a metallic chip and it is identified as gear material, refer to
Rolls−Royce Deutschland, Service Engineering.

(g) If you find a metallic chip and it is identified as bearing material, reject the
engine.

(h) If you find gear tooth fragments, refer to Rolls−Royce Deutschland, Service
Engineering.

(i) If it is necessary to reject the engine, do the tasks that follow:

1 Remove the power plant (TASK 71−00−00−000−801).

2 Install the power plant (TASK 71−00−00−400−801).

(j) Reject the accessory gearbox if you find the particles that follow:
− Metallic flakes from a gear
− Metallic chip from a gear
− Gear tooth fragments.

(k) If it is necessary to reject the accessory gearbox, refer to Rolls−Royce

Deutschland, Service Engineering.

(l) Carefully remove the debris with adhesive tape and keep it with the engine log
book.

(5) If you reject the engine or accessory gearbox, you must send the particles from the
magnetic chip−detector with the component to the overhaul shop.

(6) Install the magnetic chip−detector in the correct location (EMM TASK
79−21−04−400−801).

(7) Do the quantity check of the oil supply at the engine oil tank
