Dosimetry
Radiation dosimetry deals with the calculation of the absorbed
dose in matter and tissue resulting from the exposure to
indirectly and directly ionizing radiation

Film badge dosimeters

 small portable devices for monitoring cumulative
radiation dose due to ionizing radiation.

Usage: The badge is typically worn on the outside of clothing,

around the chest This location monitors exposure of most vital
.organs

 The badge consists of two parts: photographic film, and a

holder. In it, photographic or dental X-ray film wrapped in
light-tight paper.
 The piece of photographic film that is the sensitive
material and it must be removed monthly and developed
 The blackening of the film is linear to the dose, and doses
up to about 10 Gy can be measured. The more radiation
exposure, the more blackening of the film.

Thermo-luminescence dosimeter(TLD)
 Thermoluminescence (TL) is a technique to measure the
intensity of luminescence of a sample when it is irradiated
by UV radiation, X-rays, γ-rays, or an electron beam as a
function of temperature.
 It is the most often used for personnel dosimetry and also
used for environmental monitoring .
 A TLD uses the radio-thermo-luminescence effect of
irradiated crystals. It emits light photons, the number of
which is proportional to irradiation dose when heated.
 TLDs are relatively small in size and highly sensitive to
various radiations.

 The light output (thermo-luminescence) varies as

dosimeters are heated.
 The variation in the light output with temperature is
called a glow curve. The TLD processing equipment is
programmed to detect and record the light output
corresponding to these peaks. The magnitude of the light
produced for a particular peak depends on the dose.
Ionization Chambers
 Ion chambers have a good uniform response to radiation
over a wide range of energies and are the preferred
means of measuring high levels of gamma radiation.
 They are widely used in the nuclear power industry,
research labs, radiography, radiobiology, and
environmental monitoring.
 It is based on the collection of the charge created by
interaction of radiation in the gas.
 It consists of a gas-filled chamber with two electrodes;
known as anode and cathode. When gas between the
electrodes is ionized by incident ionizing radiation. This
generates an ionization current which is measured by an
electrometer circuit.
