Highlights
India has now become power surplus from power deficit. Therefore, it is currently focusing on supply of
quality power to consumers. As of December 2019, the National Electric Grid had an installed capacity of
368.79 GW.
Issues
Though India has surplus power, the country lacks adequate infrastructure. Still around 136 million Indians
use traditional fuels such as agricultural waste, firewood, dry animal dung fuel for cooking and heating
needs. This affects their health badly. According to WHO, more than 300,000 to 400,000 people in India die
due to indoor air pollution.
Coal based electricity
Today, India’s power production is dominated by coal. As of May 2019, 72% of India’s electricity was
generated from coal-based power plants. However, several energy institutes predict that dependence of
India on coal is to reduce. For instance, the BP Energy Outlook, 2019 says that India’s primary energy
consumption is to decline from 56% (2017) to 48% in 2040.
India is slowly shifting towards other sources of energy, especially solar energy. India has set a target of
achieving 175 GW of renewable energy. Of this, 100 GW is to be solar power.
Corona Virus: UGC reschedules exams; International airlines banned temporarily
On March 19, 2020, the University Grants Commission directed all the affiliated colleges and universities to
postpone the ongoing examinations. The evaluation works have also been directed to be rescheduled.
The GoI has also ordered other bodies operating under Ministry of HRD such as AICTE, NIOS, NTA, NCTE
and CBSE to reschedule their exams.
Highlights
With the number of persons infected with the COVID-19 virus, has increased to 173, the UGC has also
instructed the school education boards such as CBSE to postpone the exams.
International Airlines
The Government of India has also banned the operation international commercial airlines in the country.
The rule is to be implemented from March 22, 2020. This will ban foreigners from entering the country. The
notification of the order was issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
Global concerns
The International Air Transport recently warned that if Corona Virus is not contained at the earliest, the
outbreak is to cost 113 billion USD of revenue loss globally. Out of all the other industries, tourism takes an
unprecedented hit.
India and Israel sign Rs 880 crore Defence Deal
On March 19, 2020, the Indian Armed Forces operating under Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with
the Israel Weapons Industry. According to the agreement, India is to procure 16, 479 LMG (Light Machine
Guns) for Rs 880 crores.
Light Machine Gun
The Light Machine Guns are used as squad automatic weapons. The LMG were first used in Second World
War. The name of the LMGs India is buying from Israel is called Negev. Negev is gas operated LMG.
The weapon is important as it will boost the confidence of the frontline troops. It will provide them the
combat power they need.
India-Israel Defence Relations
India sees Israel’s Defence Industry as a useful source of weapons. In 2016, India signed a 600 million USD
deal with Israel making Israel the second largest Defence partner of India in 2016. The Heron Drones of
India used in Indian Air Force were bought from Israel. Later in 2017, the countries signed another deal of 2
