“We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.” What Oscar Wilde meant
with these words is that while we all face difficulties in life, some people choose to focus on
their goals and aspirations instead. In dark times it is essential to remain positive, to engage in something hopeful,
beautiful, or stimulating. A group who has been “looking at the stars” both metaphorically and literally for decades are
the people at NASA. Since its founding in 1958, NASA has been advancing scientific knowledge and our understanding
of the Earth and the cosmos. Its latest discovery, announced a few weeks ago, was obtained by SOFIA (Stratospheric
Observatory for Infrared Astronomy), a very unusual telescope. SOFIA was not built on the ground, but rather in a
Boing 747.
