INTRODUCTION
•Traditional ornaments worn by women in India, covering their wrists are named as Bangles.

•Bangles are traditionally rigid bracelets, originating from the Indian subcontinent, which are usually
made of metal, wood, glass, lac or plastic. And also are made of gold, silver and many other alloys.

•The bangles are created in amazing varieties and are decorated with lovely stones, colours and metal
embedding etc.

• Bangles hold a very significant place in the life of Indian women.

•Bangles also have a very traditional value in all religion as it is considered inauspicious for a married
woman to be bare armed.

•A special type of bangle is worn by women and girls, especially in the Bengal area, commonly known
as a "Bengali bangle"

•Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh is India's largest producer of bangles.


HISTORY
Bangles made from sea shell, copper, bronze, gold, agate, chalcedony, etc. have been excavated
from multiple archaeological sites throughout the world from ancient period. A figurine of a
dancing girl wearing bangles on her left arm has been excavated from Mohenjo-Daro (2600
BC).

The word is derived from Hindi Bungri (glass).

In different places it is called in different names like

USES
Bangles, in India, usually used by married women or girl.

Bangles play a very important role in various India dance forms.

Some men and women wear a single bangle on the arm or wrist called kada or kara.
What do bangles symbolize?
Bangles are symbolic of happy daughters and wives. 'lustrous token of radiant lives'. Where
blue and silver bangles symbolize maidenhood, yellow and red bangles 'rich with the hue of
her heart's desire' symbolize the sanctity of marriage and love for the brides and married
women.

They signify good fortune and prosperity.


TYPES OF BANGLES

There are two basic types of bangles: a


solid cylinder type; and a split, cylindrical
closing type. The primary distinguishing
factor between these is the material used to
make the bangles. This may vary from
anything from glass to jade to metal
to lac and even rubber or plastic.
LAC BANGLES
Bangles are made of gold, silver and
many other alloys. Lac bangles
produced in Jaipur are considered
divine and is compulsory for newly
married females to wear them in
Jaipur, Rajasthan of India. The
bangles are created in amazing
varieties and are decorated with
lovely stones, colors and metal
embedding etc. Lac is the natural
resin secreted by a tiny insect
collected from trees and is further
processed by traditional craftsmen
to create Lac bangles.
GLASS BANGLES
Glass is one of the most unique material,
which can shaped and molded into various
shapes, size and designs. The making process
of glass bangles requires great patience,
because skilled Artisans mix borax, sand,
lime stone in a suitable proportion and fed
manually into a furnace and are melted in and
around temperatures of 1300 to 1400 C to
obtain molten glass.
Firozabad, a city in Uttar Pradesh of India,
has been famous since 17th century for its
exquisite production of glass bangles,
MATERIAL USED IN LAC BANGLES

Bangles made from lac are one of the oldest types and among the most brittle. Lac is a
resinous material, secreted by insects, which is collected and molded in hot kilns to make
these bangles.
MATERIAL USED FOR MANUFACTURING LAC
BANGLES

• Coal burner : This is used for heating and melting of the lac.
• Shallow vessel: This is generally an aluminum vessel used to melt lac either to make colors
or normal lac rod.
• Stones and beads : Stones and beads of different colors are used to embellish the bangles.
• Tweezers : Used to pick the metal bangle while heating and picking the stones to embellish
on the lac.
• Flat wooden tool : This is used for pressing and shaping lac bangles for sizing.
• Round wooden rod : This is used for sizing the bangles.
• Raw Materials : Lac is a natural material procured from the forest and then goes through
several steps of refinement to be finally used in making the products.
MATERIAL USED IN GLASS BANGLES
• Different kind of tools are involved in making glass bangles as most of them are custom made by the
Artisan to fit the needs.

• Soda ash and silica are the main raw materials used in the production of glass.

BANGLES

• Tank Furnace: The raw materials are melted in the furnace at a temperature of about 1300 to
1400 C to obtain molten glass.
• Pakai Bhatti : The bangles are baked in a furnace called pakai bhatti which smoothens the sharp
edges and makes the bangles bright and attractive.
• Belan /Spindle: Long steel rod that is rotated to draw glass melt into spirals, which are then cut to
make raw bangles.
• Zari : A glittering strip used to make patterns on the bangle.
• Hil : Silver and gold polish on bangles.
MAKING OF LAC BANGLES

• Lac pieces are melted in shallow


vessel
• Beroza and colour are added to it
• Mixture is then stirred
continuously

• Lac , covered with the mixture is


slowly heated.
• Pressed with a stone or hatha
• When warm, it is wrapped with desire
colour.
• Shaped in thin coil.

• The coil is heated to make ends

• Slipped through a round
wooden beam to fit different
sizes.
• Ready for embellishments
MAKING OF GLASS BANGLES

• Glass is melted at 1300C to 1400C.


• Glob of molten glass is then shaped in a
conical shape by rotating the rod.
• Transferred to another furnace where
Artisans works in synchronization with
the machine.

• Filament of glass is placed in rotating


rod, which is constantly rotated on a
motor.
• The molten glass loops around the
rod taking the shape of a bangle.

• Metallic ruler which prevents bangles from


sticking to each other on the spindle is used.
• hen the spindle gets filled up it will be
removed, and the glass bangles is taken out,
which looks like a long glass spiral.
• The glass spiral is joined by using candle or
kerosene lamp.
