The key takeaways are that new technologies like virtual care nursing can help address growing demands on the healthcare system by improving quality of care, engagement, and retention of nurses. However, implementing virtual care nursing requires an organized change management process.

Telehealth refers to remote healthcare services delivered via technologies like video and audio. It includes clinical services as well as education and administration. Telemedicine specifically refers to remote clinical services. Both aim to improve access to care through technology.

The two main standards of practice that govern telehealth nursing are from the American Academy of Ambulatory Nursing and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. They provide guidelines on the scope and standards of telehealth nursing practice.

Virtual Care Nursing:

The Wave of the Future

There is a need to create new and innovative models of care to meet the growing
demands of patients and nurses. New technologies bring about novel and flexible
ways of working. One innovative strategy is the use of virtual care nursing delivery
model. Virtual care nursing operationalizes technology, supports clinical decision-
making processes, continuity of care, and patient safety and provides a work
environment conducive for keeping technically competent and highly educated
nurses engaged at the bedside.
