Primary Source has been regarded as the source of the “best evidence” but when many
eyewitnesses supply information, discrepancies and contradictions emerged. What do you
think is the best solution to have accurate and exact narration of events coming from different
sources?
Answer:
When primary sources being opposed by many eyewitnesses that supply information,
discrepancies, and contradictions about it. If this happens the best solution to have an
accurate and exact narration of events is to evaluate critically both the primary source and the
contradictions emerged. The best way to evaluate both primary sources and the contradictions
emerged is by external and internal criticism. Because history is a very delicate study; it
needs to be genuine and authentic, you cannot easily claim such information is true or legit.
We need to go through the process of what we call external and internal criticism; critical
evaluation of the authenticity and truthfulness of both primary sources and contradictions
emerged. We are going to verify the authenticity by examining its content and information if
it is consistent with the time it happens, where it happened, the language used if it is
consistent, evidence to other individuals, settings, contexts, and time frames should be
consistent as well. And when we are done evaluating, verifying, and critically analyzing the
information, the source that is structured appropriately and can give the most consistent, most
factual, and most truthful information we can now say it is the source that has the accurate
and exact narration of events.
Under the new General Education Courses (GEC), Philippine History in the tertiary level will
be taught using primary sources. As student, what do you think would be the challenges and
opportunities in teaching Philippine History with this kind of approach?
Answer: As a student, the challenges in teaching Philippine History using primary sources
are:
1
Student like me can’t read all the primary sources since some primary sources are written in
different dialect.2 Student may find this primary sources difficult to read and understand since
primary sources contain words or phrases that are unfamiliar and their meanings may have
changed from time-to-time that needs a true historian with wide knowledge about the past
that can explain meaningfully the right way.3 Primary sources demands high comprehension
from students.4. Some page of primary sources already faded and even erased. 5. And some
primary sources are too old and easily be tear if not handle properly.
The advantages in teaching Philippine History using primary sources are:
1.
It helps the student develop critical thinking, making intelligent inferences, and developing
reasoned explanations and interpretations of events and issues in the past.2. It does not limit
the knowledge of student to history as “the events in the past”. Provide information to the
students on the “who, what, where, when, why, and how” of an event.3. it shows the record of
a particular moment in time. 4 students can learn different dialects and forms of writing. 5
Students can gain knowledge of how to analyse old data or information.
