Perimeter Lesson Plan 2
Perimeter Lesson Plan 2
Perimeter Lesson Plan 2
Learning Objective: Students will be able to recognize and explain the different counting
techniques that can be used to find a perimeter of rectangles.
Introduction: Review the definitions of perimeter, by asking the class to define what a
perimeter is. Take several responses to get an idea of what the students remember from previous
lesson.

First Stage
- Assess prior knowledge on what the students remember about measuring their puzzle
boxes.
- Ask the students clarifying questions before moving on.
- Give the students a rectangle cut out of graph paper, so they are able count the squares
units.
- Ask the students to find the perimeter of the rectangle ANY way they can.
- Ask 2 or 3 students to demonstrate to the class how they found the area and perimeter.
- Sharing feedback with the class and then demonstrating how I (teacher role) can find the
perimeter.
Time 5-10 Minutes

Second Stage
- Grouping the class back together, I will then demonstrate how to count all the squares in
the rectangle. By doing this I can demonstrate that this is another way to find the
perimeter.
- Showing the students what the inside of a rectangle can look like and understanding that
the perimeter can be a simply way of thinking.
- Getting feedback from the students before moving on.
Rylee John
- Drawing and counting these steps on the board for students to slowly follow along with
me.
Time: 5-10 Minutes
Third Stage/Individual
- Once the steps have been clarified I will ask each student to raise their hand if they are
ready to begin finding a perimeter.
- Handout the worksheet that is attached to this lesson.
- First, explaining in detail the directions in finding the perimeter of the rectangles.
- Scaffolding around the room and answering questions if applied.
- Reminding the students that they can shade with their colored pencils to help them count
each square.
- Each table will have mini manipulatives to help their counting and showing how much
quantity is shown in the rectangle.
Time: 10-15 Minutes
