Q1) Write Short Notes on any four (4) of the following: (4 × 5 = 20 Marks)
a) What schools of thought shaped the process of legal codification from 1757-1857? What were the
similarities and differences in their approaches to the sources of law? Did these different approaches to
codification have very different effects on society?
b) Neither individual property rights nor a ‘rule of law’ were realised by the Company State. Discuss.
c) How did racial stereotypes and British notions of criminality dictate the need for stringent laws dealing
with 'people on the move'? Explain with reference to the Criminal Tribes Act 1871 and Thuggee Act of
1836?
d) Compare and contrast the respective ways in which the sexuality and mobility of middle class and
working class women was controlled in colonial India.
e) In what ways did agitations about religious endowments shape mass politics about religion?
