Dr. Jose Rizal was also an Inventor. On the year 1887, while practicing
medicine in Calamba, he invented a cigarette lighter which he sent to
Blumentritt and called it "sulpukan" made of wood and its mechanism is based
on the principle of compressed air. He also invented a wooden machine for
making bricks in Dapitan. The machine he invented could manufacture about
6000 bricks daily.
One of his professions was being a Visual Artist. His grandfather was a
visual artist. As young as 12 years old, Jose Rizal already was a visual artist.
At his early age, he was already painting using the food coloring called
"atsuete". Jose Rizal has a lot of visual art masterpiece, he made a self-portrait,
portrait of his first love and his first girlfriend. He also made a watercolor
painting of Jesus Christ. He painted Christopher Columbus in front of the
Queen and the King of Spain. He made a doodle of his professor. He also drew
the last scenery of Manila that he saw before leaving for the first time, going to
his first trip to Europe in May 1882- "Unang paglalakbay". He drew the 10 of
many different ships he boarded at and also the different people he was able to
socialize with in those ships. He also drew the different scenery of different
places while aboard in different ships. He drew his own image again for
Ferdinand Blumentritt to know who he was during their first meeting at a train
station. After sometime of being friend, he then drew Ferdinand Blumentritt.
One of his famous visual arts was the design for the cover of Noli Me Tangere.
He also drew sceneries from Germany, portrait of Fernando Magallanes and an
imitation of Japanese art. In Dapitan, he drew his houses and the fishes he
collected at sea. Another one of his famous pieces of art is the Mother's
Revenge which is a clay sculpture he created 1894. Rizal was inspired to create
the sculpture by an incident that occurred while he was in Dapitan, where he
was deported and set up a school.
Dr. Jose Rizal was a skilled Novelist, his most famous novels are the
Noli Me Tangere and its sequel, El Filibusterismo which played a crucial role in
the political history of the Philippines. Drawing from experience, the
conventions of the 19th century novel, and the ideals of European liberalism,
Rizal offrered up a devastating critique of society under Spanish colonial rule.
He was also a Prolific Poet and Essayist. His famous poems are “Mi Ultimo
Adios”, “A la Juventud Filipina”, “Sa Aking Mga Kabata , and “Himno al
Trabajo”.
