Essay Online Education As A "New Normal"
As time passes by, online technology is considered as convenient way of learning new things
even if you’re not in school. Just by searching on Google for the informations you want to know up to the
YouTube where you can watch videos related to solving, experimenting or even tutorials to help you
understand more clearly on your subjects. Online learning is one of the great options to help people in
many different ways, but the thing is, are we prepared if the only option we have is to learn online and no
physical contact as much as possible?
One of the main issues we are facing in the field of education is how to pursue studying amidst
the time of the pandemic. As the government intended to combat and lessen the transmission of COVID-
19, the Philippines response to the novel coronavirus was to implement General Community Quarantine
(GCQ). GCQ is a form of quarantine with more relaxed measures compared to the enhanced community
quarantine (ECQ). It will be enforced in provinces and cities considered to have moderate or low risk to
COVID-19. Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque introduced this term in his taped public address aired
on Friday, April 24. He also explained what GCQ means to daily lives of Filipinos, as recommended by
the government's coronavirus taskforce and approved by President Rodrigo Duterte. (Ranada, 2020). This
idea will help the Government battle the COVID-19 to spread and it will help the frontliners to maintain
the cases they are having. In this way, we can help them to flatten the curve of the infected individuals,
fight the virus. The question is what is going to happen under the general community quarantine they
enforced? Through remaining at home, they gave two options to resume the school’s activity or what we
called the distance learning strategy, first is having an online class at home or by choosing modular for
those students who are not capable to go online. Since face-to-face classes are not yet allowed, the DepEd
implemented the Blended/Distance learning wherein the combination of the various distance learning
modalities such as printed modules, offline digital modules, online, and TV and Radio-based instruction
will be used by students and teachers when classes formally start.
Because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, millions of students around the
world are expected to officially resume their education after a delay of almost seven months. However,
despite efforts to offer different options to make education more accessible and inclusive during the so-
called new normal, not every student has decided to return to school. A survey conducted by Save the
Children International showed that at least 10 million students worldwide will not be able to return to
school this year due to lack of access to technology needed for distance learning and support they need at
home. (Mateo,2020)
Does the idea of having an 'academic freeze' can be the best option for Filipino students for now?
Is the new mode of learning can really help all the students to learn or is it just for those students who
have the privilege to have what is needed to attain the quality education?
It is really problematic now how we're supposed to keep on what we're used to be doing every
day, but I hope that someday, the new normal we are having, will soon be back to the “normal” we are
used to, specifically for the reason that not everyone can have the privilege for what the “new normal”
demands.
ANALYSIS:
Since the global pandemic started, several concerns have been raised in my mind. On this day
when no one is sure if we will survive the virus that threatens our immune system, if we can cope up to
the new normal and new mode of learning that was forced to us, if we can minimize our available
resources where most of Filipino employees lost their job; resulting for our everyday lives to be greatly
affected by it. One thing that is clear is that we know it will be tough for all of us to respond to this
sudden change.
I am just as worried as other students for those who do not have the equipment and time to take
part in this new normal agenda. I know that there are some students who needs to feed their family more
than anything else that’s why new normal is not one of their options. But what else can we do? I don't
think academic freeze are going to be accepted because too much delay in our education has been made
just to help our government fight the COVID-19. One major reason the academic freeze will not be
tolerated is that, our economic state is not in a good condition since the lockdown, what more if we
stopped producing graduates to help boost our economy for future years.
A new normal is upon us, prioritizing the safety of ourselves and the people around us. I, as a
student, is still adjusting to the new normal, new setups for learning same as our professors since they are
used to teach in the common way. No one is at fault, no one wants the world to stop spinning, no one
should suffer from not having an access to education. Education is a right and definitely not a privilege.
