Package Installation using Pulling Posts

- General Guidance

1.0 Introduction
1.1 The intention of this document is to provide general guidance on the use of pulling posts in pre-cast
or pre drilled ‘pulling post pockets’ found in the contract foundations, refer to the contract foundation
drawing for details, to pull or ‘turf’ a Siemens Gas Turbine Package into alignment.

1.2 The procedure is non contract specific, and may be applicable to all SGT power ratings and
packages.

1.3 Reference should also be made to the relevant Package Laydown procedure. For example for SGT-
400 Generating Sets, refer to EIN 02-01-024.

2.0 Pulling Post Locations

2.1 The post holes are nominally located at the 4-off corners of each base frame, approximately 1.5m -
2.0m away from the package. If the package is of a split base frame type, then 6-off pulling post
holes are typically used.

3.0 Longitudinal Positioning
3.1 For longitudinal positioning of the package, lower the package onto skates; these are used to
decrease the forces required to ‘turf’ the package, and should be suitably rated for the vertical load
supported.

3.2 Assemble Pulling Brackets, suitably rated ‘D’ Shackles, Pulling Straps and Turfors/Chain-Blocks (see
Appendices) to 4-off pad positions, utilising the base frame feet jacking location, refer to below
figures. The guidance is to utilise pulling posts such that the pulling angle is minimised, while also
ensuring pulling from in front of the centre of gravity, this ensures control of movement.

3.3 Two of the pulling locations are used to restrain the package from being pulled too far or ‘over-shoot’
the required mark, thus providing a safety mechanism. The pulling of a package is therefore at least
a two person operation, such that both the pulling and restraining Turfors/Chain-Blocks can be
operated simultaneously.

4.0 Lateral Positioning
4.1 Again with the package installed on skates, assembly the pulling equipment from 4-off pulling posts
to the package, again selecting pulling posts to give minimum angle, and using suitably rated ‘D’
shackles to brackets attached to the jacking bolt holes. Refer to the following figures.

The above is typical and alternative attachment methods can be devised.

5.0 Loads & Stresses

5.1 The load a single pulling post should not exceed 27kN (this is based on positioning an SGT-400 AC
Generator Driven Unit).

5.2 All pulling equipment should therefore be suitably rated for the above loads; it is suggested a
minimum rating of 5 tonnes should be used.

5.3 Assuming the use of a 50mm diameter bar, the shear stress will not exceed 15 N/mm 2.

5.4 Providing the sling or strap is positioned at the very bottom of the pulling post, and the angle of the
sling to the horizontal is kept to a minimum, the additional bending stress will be negligible.
