VIRTUAL CLASS NORMS

ALGEBRA 1 STAAR TEST
This class is an EOC STAAR tested subject. (IT IS THE ONLY MATH STAAR TEST IN
HIGH SCHOOL.) In the spring there will be opportunities for additional STAAR
prep tutoring sessions held before and after school. It is vital that students and
parents are working hard to gain the mathematical vocabulary and high level
algebraic skills needed to be successful on this test. Everything we do in this
class is geared to help students understand the concepts and demonstrate
mastery of Algebra topics.

Students must pass both the STAAR Algebra 1 Test and Algebra 1 class to
graduate. Passing the test does not mean you pass the class. Passing the class does not mean you pass the
test.

BUT FEAR NOT, WE WILL BE PREPARED TO TACKLE THE STAAR IN MAY! ☺

VIRTUAL CLASS PROCEDURES

BEFORE CLASS
We run a flipped classroom. This means your “homework” will
be watching a 10-15 minute video and completing the notes
and practice problems. We will post a link in GC at the end of
each class period that contains the following:
● An Edpuzzle Link - the place you watch the video
● A PDF copy of the notes - you will open this with Kami in
your Google Drive to “write” on. If you prefer writing all
of your notes in a spiral notebook that is permissible.

DURING CLASS MEET

At the start of each class we will gather together on the Google
Meet linked at the top of each Google Classroom. During this
direct instruction time we will review and practice the skills
learned from the previous day’s homework. PLEASE
PARTICIPATE AND ASK QUESTIONS AS THIS IS YOUR TIME TO
EXPLORE MATH AND LEARN! We may practice with a
PearDeck, Desmos Activities, Kahoot, Gimkit, etc. You must be
present on the Meet (with cameras on!) for all of direct
instruction.

DURING CLASS, BUT AFTER THE MEET

While we will not be meeting virtually for the entire 90 minute
class period, students are expected to work on the independent
practice assignments after the Meet, during class. We intend for the independent practice we assign to only
take students the “rest of class” to finish. Your teachers will stay on a Meet for questions and concerns for
the duration of class time.
REMEMBER YOUR “HOMEWORK” IS WATCHING THE LESSON AND TAKING NOTES FOR THE NEXT CLASS DAY! THIS
IS NOT OPTIONAL.
ACADEMIC GRADES
Students’ academic grades will report their ability to show mastery over content.

DAILY WORK - STANDARDS (80%)

Students will be given an assessment of some sort almost every day over concepts and standards for the
course. The grades in Skyward report mastery of each TEKS/standard we learn. The grades in Google
Classroom may reflect other information for the student (completion log, etc).

SIX WEEKS TESTS/PROJECT (20%)

Students will have some summative assessments
throughout the year to take snapshots of their
understanding of the learning. These may take the
form of a traditional test or an interactive project.

RECOVERY LEARNING
Because students learn at different paces, we
have a process called recovery learning in place to
help grades reflect a current understanding of
TEKS mastery. If a student is unhappy with their
score on a particular TEKS in Skyward, they can
complete an additional recovery learning
assignment after some targeted tutoring and
practice. The general flowchart is on the right.

ABSENCE POLICY
DURING VIRTUAL LEARNING
You are responsible for all information/content and all assignments/tests that you missed.

When you are absent, a Google Classroom Question “We Missed You!” will be assigned to you. Please
respond to this question ASAP for attendance purposes. All of the classwork and learning assignments will
remain “live” for you to complete on your own.

Let us be frank: IT WILL BE EASIER TO LEARN AND PASS IF YOU ARE PRESENT AND PARTICIPATING IN
CLASS.

DURING IN-PERSON LEARNING

TO BE DETERMINED AT A LATER DATE
APPS, WEBSITES, ETC.
SKYWARD
Download the Skyward App to keep track of your grades in all of your classes. Use this tool to be
aware of missing grades, low grades, and tutoring needs.

Please do not ask me what grade you have, I will direct you to your Skyward account so you can be
independent and check for yourself, plus I will be annoyed.

REMIND101
You join your class’ Remind101. We will post important class announcements on Remind. This is
also the best way to get in contact with us outside of class hours. Codes are listed at the top of the
syllabus. We prefer this over posting tutorial questions on Google Classroom!

DESMOS
Download the Desmos App and use this to help you graph/plot all year long. Desmos = <3

We will be able to use the Test Mode Version on all tests, DCPs, and STAAR tests so
maybe download this version so you’re practicing with the one we will use.

EDPUZZLE
We will use a website called Edpuzzle to distribute the video lessons for the flipped classroom.
These assignments will be linked in Google Classroom for easy access.

KAMI
We will use the Kami Chrome Extension to take notes digitally. It will help students keep track of all
of their math notes as it organizes it all online.

If you’d rather take notes with a paper and pencil, that is perfectly fine as long as you keep up with
all your notes!

EDULASTIC
Students will use a website called Edulastic for most formative assessments and independent
practices. These will be completed DURING class time, but after the Google Meet ends. These
assignments will be linked in Google Classroom for easy access.
