The document outlines the steps for reprogramming the onboard supply control unit on certain Volkswagen vehicles to address issues with vehicle lights not being correctly recognized.

Recall campaign 97CH is being conducted to reprogram the onboard supply control unit on affected Volkswagen vehicles, as faulty or incorrect vehicle lights may be shown in the instrument cluster due to an issue with certain production periods.

The onboard supply control unit must be reprogrammed using an ODIS tester connected to the vehicle's diagnosis port. The ignition must be on and other steps like opening the driver's door and engaging the hazard lights must be followed during reprogramming.

Notes   Repair instructions

Technical background
On vehicles of a certain production period faulty vehicle lights may not be recognised and therefore not shown in the instrument cluster. It is also possible that correct
vehicle lights may be shown as faulty.

Remedy
On the affected vehicles the onboard supply control unit must be reprogrammed.

Note

Before a repair check with the application "Vehicle-specific information

Ask the customer whether he commissioned third parties to make retrospective changes to the software or knows
about such changes.
Service installations in the vehicle which are not included in the vehicle equipment list through feedback to the SVM
test plan may not work after the configuration.

Customer notification
The keepers of the affected vehicles will be notified in writing.

Please observe the information of the importer.

Make sure all affected vehicles are checked and repaired as part of the workshop visit. Write the Campaign to be performed on the workshop order before the customer
signs it.
If the campaign was not performed during a workshop visit, inform the customer straight away about the campaign. Use as the sample letter from the campaign
description.

Please also inform your new and used car department, so that these vehicles can be checked and if necessary repaired straight away and not only before the sale.

Questions and answers

Which fault/damage do the affected vehicles have?

Failure of a dipped beam without replacement response (activation of the side lights) possible. It is also possible that the
failure display in the instrument cluster does not show the failure of a dipped beam, main beam, daytime running light, rear
fog light or an indicator or show a light as faulty although it is correct.
What is the cause of the fault?

The onboard supply control unit has been incorrectly calibrated.

What repercussions does the damage have?

A failure of dipped beam / main beam / daytime running light / rear fog light or indicator would not be shown in the
instrument cluster. It is also possible that correct vehicle lights may be shown as faulty. Furthermore, a failure of a dipped
beam may not trigger a replacement response (activation of side lights).
Which vehicles are affected by the fault/damage?

Golf 7, Golf 7 Estate, Sportsvan, Tiguan, Touran and Passat.

Are all vehicles affected by the fault/damage?

Only vehicles with a certain software version (S0162) of the onboard supply control unit are affected.
Can I use the vehicle till it is checked/repaired?

Yes, the vehicle can be used till it is reprogrammed.

Is there a danger for the consumers?

A light failure without replacement response or without display in the instrument cluster can pose a danger of an accident,
especially in the dark. In some countries and with certain equipment combinations of the vehicle legal registration
requirements are not fulfilled.

11/15/2020 Recall campaign 97CH 2046231/1
Have there been any customer complaints?
No, we do not know of any customer complaints.

What precisely does the repair involve?

The onboard supply control unit is reprogrammed.

Can the driver recognise the fault?

Yes, the display in the instrument cluster does not match the actual light failure and the parking light is not activated in case
of a dipped beam failure.
What is done to prevent this fault/damage from recurring?

In production the control units are correctly calibrated.

How long does the repair take?

The repair of the vehicle takes about 30 about minutes.

Does the Mobility Guarantee apply?

No.
Can I have the check/repair carried out all over Europe?

Yes, all Volkswagen retailers in Europe have been informed.

Do I have to make an appointment?

Yes, that's important. Your retailer needs to ensure that the necessary parts for your vehicle are available.

Check

If the vehicle is listed in "Vehicle-specific information" (in Service Online or ELSA) as not yet completed, check whether there
is a campaign sticker with the entry 97CH date/stamp
If the campaign sticker is attached, the campaign has
already been performed. Make the entry "97CH
date/stamp" in the service schedule under "Space for
workshop entries".

If the campaign sticker with entry "97CH" is not fitted,

Carry out the work according to the repair instructions.

Control
Check of the work scope (criteria) - see "Vehicle-specific information" (ELSA or Service Online):

Work

Note

As part of this campaign only the onboard supply control unit is reprogrammed. Do not update other control units.

General information for the reprogramming:

• Requirement for reprogramming the onboard supply control unit:

ODIS tester Baseline version from 2.32.7

• The closed-circuit voltage of the vehicle must be at least 12.5 V during the reprogramming. Connect the battery of the vehicle to an external power supply. For
further information see the maintenance manual or the repair manual.
• During the reprogramming switch off all unnecessary consumers (ventilation, seat heater, inside light.
• Because of the highest transmission stability we recommend the use of the diagnosis interface VAS 6154 (WiFi diagnostic tool) only in the USB operation or the
cable-connected VAS 5055 for the reprogramming (updating) of control units. If these units are not available, the diagnosis interface VAS 5054 (A) can also be
used in USB mode.
• If installed, remove the hotfix from the diagnostic tester, otherwise event entries may be logged during the application (only if necessary).

Reprogramming of power system control unit

Connect the online diagnostic tester to the diagnosis connection of the vehicle and the workshop server.

Note

Before starting the reprogramming always perform an ignition cycle.

Please note
On vehicles with a “Keyless Access locking and starting system” and an ignition lock, the ignition key must be
inserted into the ignition lock. For vehicles with a “Keyless Access locking and starting system” without an
ignition lock, the ignition key must be securely held in the emergency start function position (on the right hand
side of the steering column).

Switch on the ignition.

- Put the selector lever in position P (automatic/DSG only)

- Switch on the hazard warning lamps.
- The driver door must be open during the reprogramming.

Note:
The hazard warning lamps and the open driver door prevent a bus silence and therefore the failure of the update.

ODIS tester diagnosis:

In "diagnosis" select "start diagnosis" and identify the vehicle.

After identifying the control units the Guided Fault Finding starts automatically.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
In the "special functions select "update software".

The software update takes place via

Enter the action code 3F24 and confirm the input.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

After the successful reprogramming end the application:

The fault entries are automatically deleted.

If faults are logged after leaving the diagnosis, a data bus silence must be established on the vehicle. Then delete the faults in the self-diagnosis.

Note

If no software update is suggested, the software is up-to-date. No further work necessary, continue with chapter
"Identification

Contrary to the information on the diagnostic tester a readiness code does NOT have to be created.
