LESSON 1: UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL STUDIES

From this Lesson, I learned that, social studies is a vital part of the elementary levels or in the
early childhood curriculum. Since childrens formative experiences shape their attitudes as
citizens of their classroom, their schools, and of the community. We know that young children
engage in their play ad daily activities, and they show a natural interest in the world around
them.

As a future educator, it is very important to support and provide these interests and create
learning environments and a variety of experiences with social studies in their mind,
cultivating and extending young children's diverse skills and abilities to form and voice
opinions, identify and solve problems, negotiate roles, perceive diversity and inequality, and
recognize the consequences of their decisions and behaviors on others.

ELEMENTARY SOCIAL STUDIES

From this Lesson, I learned that social studies at the elementary level should provide learners
with powerful and purposeful learning experiences that are challenging, of high quality,
developmentally appropriate and reflective of contemporary social and diverse global

, participate in, and make informed decisions about their world. It also allows learners to
explain relationships with other people, to institutions, and to the environment, and equips
them with knowledge and understanding of the past. It provides learners with skills for
productive problem solving and decision making as well as for assessing issues and making
thoughtful value judgments. Most of all, it integrates these skills and understanding into a
framework for responsible citizen participation locally, nationally, and globally.
