Radio Coverage Improvement and Extension.

Mobile Network Operators competing for profitability

There are two ways of improving profitability of a business operation. First, and most • Number of BTS sites
obvious, is of course to increase the revenue. Secondly, to minimise the expenditure. The reduce
LGP Tower Mounted Amplifier System is able to address both of these, simultaneously.
• Indoor and outdoor
coverage increase
The operator of a mobile network is faced with high costs both when it comes to initial
• Increase of successful
infrastructure investments and ongoing operation and maintenance. The main cost-
call attempts
driving factor for a mobile network is coverage and this cost can be limited by
minimising the number of base stations for sufficent coverage and capacity. This is • Decrease in dropped

• Enables low power

LGP Tower Mounted Amplifiers (TMAs) enables base stations to receive mobile signals, mobiles
more clearly in a wider coverage area than they could otherwise achieve. By increasing
coverage of the BTSs number of sites reduces, LGP TMAs therefore offer a cost-effective
opportunity of providing a balanced system design. The usage of LGP TMAs will also
increase the signal quality and/or reduce the transmitted power of the mobile. This will
normally result in increase of successful call attempts, reduction of dropped calls,
maximised data transmission speed, improved call quality and extension of mobile
battery life time.

Coverage enhancement and signal quality improvement have the combined effect of
increasing traffic volume and user satisfaction, hence increasing network revenue.

New network roll-outs

In a new network rollout, fast deployment is vital, in order to stay ahead of the • Up to 30% reduction
competition and match the coverage of existing service providers. This is an area where of investment and
LGP TMAs can provide the advantage. By using LGP TMAs the number of required BTSs maintenance costs
can be reduced and thereby shorten the time to launch. This reduction in the number of • Up to 45% faster
BTSs enables a cost-effective network and therefore a competitive pricing strategy. It is network roll-out
essential to have a foundation of good coverage and then increase capacity when and
where it is needed.

Existing mobile networks

An operator of an existing mobile network will look to continuously improve the quality • Up to 20% revenue
of the network and provide sufficient coverage to attract new subscribers. increase

• Up to 40% indoor and

TMAs have proven to be a very cost-effective solution for extending indoor and outdoor
outdoor coverage
coverage. Improved indoor and outdoor coverge leads to more successful call attempts
increase
and fewer dropped calls. Increased signal quality in the network also leads to a
reduction in dropped calls at hand-over. These overall quality improvements encourage
subscriber growth increase and reduced churn, which in turn leads to substantial traffic
and revenue growth. Improved signal quality in the network also enables maximised
data transmission speed when utilising wireless data applications, increases capacity in
CDMA mobile networks and enables the use of lower power mobiles.

2
LGP TMA System benefits
A case study in GSM 1800 network has been done, with and without TMAs. The purpose was to point
out possible ways of utilising TMAs to achieve cost efficient coverage. Depending on the objective, TMAs
can be used to increase the quality of coverage of existing BTSs and/or to achieve sufficient coverage
with fewer BTSs.

Link budgets were created and the coverage was calculated with MSI´s Radio Planning Tool, Planet.

Network planned
without TMA Systems
The aim was to cover a certain
suburban area in the outskirts of
Copenhagen, Denmark. The
network was planned for outdoor
use of hand-held mobiles. The
network required 22 BTS sites for
sufficient coverage. The BTS
output power had to be reduced
in order to achieve linkbalance.

Network planned with 22 BTSs without LGP TMAs.

Network upgraded
with TMA Systems
The above network was
upgraded with LGP TMA systems
on all 22 BTS sites. The result
was an increase of the indoor
coverage by 40%, while the
outdoor coverage was increased
by 50%. Linkbalance was
achieved on a higher power
level.

High quality network with 22 BTSs with LGP TMAs

Network planned with

TMA systems from start
The suburban area was planned
with TMA systems installed at
the BTS sites from start. The aim
was to re-design the original
network with fewer BTSs but
with same coverage and quality.
With only 15 BTS sites the result
was an increase of outdoor
coverage with 35% while the
same indoor coverage as original
network was managed.
