PERFORMANCE
ENHANCEMENT PROXIES

turboIP ®
With convergence of voice, data and video over satellite, some organizations are encountering
TCP/IP performance limitations. Typical satellite links exhibit both high latency and bit error rates
(impaired links), which can be challenging for the transmission of TCP.

Comtech EF Data’s turboIP Performance Enhancement Proxies were designed to combat

the inherent challenges of transmitting TCP over satellite links. The units provide transparent
acceleration of TCP sessions, increasing throughput over satellite links while requiring minimal
topology changes. The Performance Enhancement Proxies are standards-based, supporting the
Space Communications Protocol Standard Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP).  They provide reliable
connection-oriented, end-to-end data transfer for user applications. turboIP can also overcome
the deficiencies that exist with TCP, including slow start and congestion control.  Since they
interoperate with TCP/IP networks and devices, turboIP units can be seamlessly integrated into
existing networks in a staged manner, avoiding the need for network-wide upgrades.

Available in a 1RU platform, turboIP is deployed in government and military agencies plus
commercial environments around the globe. Common applications for this product are to support
organizations utilizing satellite links for Internet backbone trunking services and organizations with

network can be configured, controlled and monitored while coordinating and optimizing
network bandwidth and capacity. Our solutions increase efficiency and provide real-time,
interactive connectivity in fixed and mobile satellite networks.

Vipersat Management System

The Vipersat Management System (VMS) is a feature-rich, automated bandwidth,
capacity, and network management system with a high degree of configuration
automation. It is designed to enable network administrators and satellite service
providers to easily configure their networks and rapidly and effectively respond to network
anomalies. More than a network monitor and control platform, VMS automates the carrier
switching and spectrum management processes within the satellite network. These
capabilities allow SCPC carriers to be switched automatically based on application, load,
or schedule, providing on-demand services and unparalleled space segment savings.

Our efficient satellite modem technologies combined with VMS provide dynamic SCPC
capacity management solutions. dSCPC facilitates bandwidth sharing, resulting in lower
space segment operating costs. Efficient, low latency and low jitter SCPC connections
can be established, torn down, and dynamically resized manually or automatically.
Virtual network operator
support (VNO)
The VNO capability provides remote user access into the VMS via
a server software application and a web-based client. VNO allows
service providers to selectively expose resources in their primary
network to external resellers, customers and/or operators. It utilizes
web-based technologies and enables flexibility in implementation of
key VMS functions. VNO enables hierarchical management of the
entire network down to select partitions. Each partition can define its
own service classes and QoS requirements.

rOAMING oceanic satellite

server (ROSS)
The Roaming Oceanic Satellite Server is an integrated location server that works in conjunction with our VMS and associated remote modems
to facilitate on-the-move satellite communications for oceanic vessels. ROSS enables remote modems to interface with stabilized, auto-tracking
antennae, maintaining connectivity as vessels transit through footprints of different satellites, change footprints on the same satellite, or switch
teleports. ROSS stores the operational and configuration information on-board remote terminals, including satellite footprint maps, shoreline
contour vector maps, exclusion areas, link budget information, multiple modem configurations and other administrative information.

Vipersat Circuit Scheduler

VCS is a web-based satellite circuit scheduler that automates the setup of ad hoc SCPC mesh connections. Circuits can be scheduled
through a browser interface by date/time, circuit type, participating nodes and data. For maximum efficiency, non-real-time traffic activities
can be scheduled during off-peak hours. Users can view schedule status (reserved bandwidth slot, real-time link quality) and can generate
analysis reports. The VCS service interacts with the VMS for the deployment and execution of circuit scheduling.

Amplifiers & BUCs

Indoor Amplifiers
Available in C-, X- or Ku-Band versions and a wide range of output power levels, our line of indoor
Solid-State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs) are reliably constructed, and are designed for use in satellite
uplink systems. Highly power-efficient in redundant applications (available in 1:1 and 1:2 redundant
configurations), they provide more cost-effective and reliable replacements for TWT amplifiers. Phase
combined system redundancy is also available for greater power optimization.

The amplifiers use a low loss combining technique with microcontroller-based temperature versus gain
compensation. Compact rack heights make them ideal for the construction of small flyaway terminals,
remote and hub earth stations. Featuring user-friendly operation, the LCD menu display and cursor
control keys simplify status monitoring and configuration.

Outdoor Amplifiers & Block Up Converters (BUCs)

HPOD – Our series of High-Power Outdoor SSPAs provide a cost effective, more reliable replacement
for TWT amplifiers in satcom terminals. Featuring field replaceable power supplies and redundant
system control, the High-Power units were built with the user in mind. The units utilize low loss combining
technique and MCP-based temperature versus gain compensation. The phase-combined systems
allow the outputs of two amplifiers to be summed together for even higher power. And, with the unique
approach to L-band frequency conversion, the optional “Smart BUC” functionality eliminates DC and
10 MHz from the input coax. Providing more value than competitive solutions, our base units include
temperature compensation, sample ports, power monitor, field-replaceable power factor corrected supply
and full remote monitor and control capabilities.

LPOD – Our extensive experience in the design of outdoor RF transceivers led to the LPOD family
of BUC products’ efficient thermal and mechanical package. Recognizing the evolution of L-Band IF
systems, the LPOD is designed to eliminate the traditional requirement for the modem to supply a DC
power source and a 10 MHz reference to the BUCs and LNBs. The LPOD’s optional internal reference
and LNB bias T greatly simplify multi-carrier operation and provide cost-effective redundant solutions.
Featuring an internal power supply, internal reference, and internal LNB bias capability, the LPOD units
offer very cost effective solutions for 1:1 redundant Tx and 1:1 redundant Rx requirements. And, the
compact size and weight make the units ideally suited to installations with limited mounting space.

standards. The close-in phase noise is also very low, which is ideal for low-bit-rate digital circuits.

High Gain – Our converters feature superior specifications for standard gain and output levels,
enabling longer cable runs and supporting elaborate combining networks without adding expensive,
external options.

Gain Compensation – Each converter includes automatic digital gain compensation to reduce
differences caused by fluctuations in the ambient temperature. This unprecedented gain stability can
lessen overall operating costs by decreasing satellite power and bandwidth usage.

Daisy Chain Switching (Patented) – The converters support redundant operation using
distributed protection switching in an active Daisy Chain configuration (U.S. Patent 5666646), providing
backup for 1 to 12 online converters. A high-speed bus provides the communications interface between
the backup and online converters to detect faults and reconfigure the subsystem to replace the failed
converter without affecting online converter operations.

Synthesizer Technology (Patented) – Using our analog/digital PLL technology (U.S. Patent
6028460), the converters provide the low phase noise performance of an analog PLL with the guaranteed
frequency accuracy of a digital PLL.

C-, X- and Ku-Band Converters

The 4500 Series of up and down frequency converters is available in C-, X-, Ku- and Wide-Band models.

L-Band Converters
For L-Band applications, we offer the LBC-4000 Up/Down Converter System, which is an indoor converter
