TIME AND CALENDAR

Introduction

We measure time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years .Time is
measured with clocks and calendars.
The Clock

The clock has 2 hands. The short hand on the clock is known as the hour hand and the long
hand is called the minute hand. There is also a third hand called the second-hand. It moves
very fast. The clock face is divided into 12 equal parts. The numbers from 1 to 12 are written
on the face of the clock.

The hour-hand moves slower than the minute hand. The hour hand makes one round of the dial
in 12 hours. It moves from one number to its next number in one hour.

The minute hand moves from one number to the next number in 5 minutes. So, the minute hand
takes 5 x 12 = 60 minutes to complete one round . The time taken by minute hand to complete
one round is called one hour.

1 hour = 60 minutes or 60 minutes = 1hour

1 minute = 60 seconds or 60 seconds = 1 minute

1 day=24 hours or 24 hours = 1 day

Each day is divided into two halves with each half having 12 hours.

12o’clock in the day is NOON and 12o’clock in the night is MIDNIGHT.

From midnight until noon is called AM.

From noon until midnight is called PM.

Telling Time

While reading or observing the time on a clock or a watch we first need to see the
position of hour hand and minute hand of the clock to know the time.

Telling theTime- O’ Clock

When minute hand points to number 12 and hour hand point to any number on the face
of clock, the time is read as 0’clock. Example: 7 o’clock, 4 o’ clock etc. It can also be
written as 7:00, 5:00.

In this clock the short hand i. e. hour hand is at number 5 and long hand i.e. Minute hand
is at number 12.The time is read as 5 o’ clock or 5:00.

Telling theTime – Half Past

We know in one hour, there are 60 minutes. So, in half an hour, there are 30 minutes i.e.
half of 60 minutes. When the minute hand has passed halfway round the clock and is at 6
it is half past the hour.

In this clock the long hand i.e. minute hand is at 6 and the short hand i.e. the hour hand
is in between 7 and 8 . We read this time as half past seven or 7:30.
