I will give students a matching worksheet, in which a description and image of different bodies
of water (lake, pond, ocean, etc.) will be provided, and students will match the body of water
to the image and description. I would use this type of assessment because selected response
assessments use a lower DOK level, which is appropriate for the skills I am requiring students
to use. The goal is for students to be able to identify bodies of water based on their
descriptions, but providing images will allow students with lower English proficiency levels
(due to being an ELL, having a learning disability, etc.) to complete the activity as well.
I anticipate this activity will show me if students are able to recall and identify different bodies
of water, as well as their characteristics that will differentiate them from other bodies of water.
In this assessment, students would be using DOK level 1 & 2 for ESS2.C, and DOK 2 for
ESS2.A. To reach these standards, they will have to recall and recognize different bodies of
water, as well as match them to their descriptions. The rationale for using a matching
assignment to meet these standards is to see if students are able to identify and recognize
bodies of water. This is an important skill that needs to be mastered before we move further on
into the unit and begin to investigate the roles of bodies of water in how they shape and
transform the landscape and other ecological systems.
If a lot of students answer incorrectly and/or struggle to answer the questions, I will go over
the different bodies of water again and help students work on it more before another
assessment. If there are only a few students struggling, I can assign those students short
projects to work on in class to further their knowledge and see if they are understanding and
give them another chance to complete the fill-in-the-blank assignment. These projects might
look something like flashcards with images of different bodies of water on them, or reading
short stories about the different bodies of water that have key sentences about differentiating
characteristics between different bodies of water.
