The WebREF isn’t designed for connecting to the Internet. It is further using internet
Note technologies.
ABB cannot take any warranty for any damages resulting from the WebREF
Note function, in case the REF542plus Ethernet network is connected to a company
Intranet or the Internet.
In case the customer decides, on his own risk, to connect to intranet or the Internet,
Warning! special security advices have to be considered. To setup switches and gateways with
the IPSec feature is mandatory as described in this manual.
3 Safety Information
There are safety warnings and notes in the following text. They are in a different
format to distinguish them from normal text.
Safety warning
The safety warnings should always be observed. Non-observance can result in
death, personal injury or substantial damages to property. Guarantee claims might
not be accepted when safety warnings are not respected. They look like below:
Do not make any changes to the REF542plus configuration unless you are
Warning! familiar with the REF542plus and its configuration tool. This might result in
disoperation and loss of warranty.

Stand-alone The unit is not connected to a SCADA system.
Firmware The base software programs stored inside the REF542plus.
Among them, there are the FUPLA file interpreter and the
protection functions programs.
Modbus By extension, communication board implementing the
Modbus protocol for REF542plus.
Configuration Tool Software program to configure the REF542plus. This
program runs on a PC.
Central Unit The REF542plus part which houses all the electronic boards
and it is directly interfaced to the primary process.
Protection Unit Same as Central Unit.
Web Interface Monitoring interface, which retrieves data from the REF542
plus. The interface is based on an Internet browser running
on a standard PC with Win 2000 or NT installed.
Internet Browser User interface for interpreting web data and display them.
The Internet browser recommended for the Web interface is
Internet explorer 5.0 or higher. (See also chapter 4.3
Supported Browsers)
Ethernet Physical communication network to transfer Internet data of
the REF542plus to the PC and back.
IP Address An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for a
node or host connection on an IP network. An IP address is
represented as 4 decimal values separated by decimal
points. This is known as "dotted decimal" notation.
Example: 140.179.220.200
The IP address and the subnet mask determine which part
belongs to the network address and which part belongs to
the node address.
To parse the xml-files and -requests, the browser needs the MSXML 3.0 parser,
witch comes with IE 5.5 and higher.
By user IE 5.x it’s necessary to install MSXML 3.0 in replace mode, witch can be
downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.
system or a Netscape Browser, the plugin can only display svg-files but no
interaction like moving or clicking elements.
Most of the other used technologies and browser-functions are also Netscape 6.x
and Mozilla 1.x compatible. For more information about svg-support in browsers
have a look at www.adobe.com/svg.
You can download if necessary the SVGview.exe from the download page from
Adobe to your PC. Simply install the SVG viewer by starting the execution file.
A further setting required for User Authentication services is the enable setting for
proxy connections. It can be found in Internet Options; Advanced. Browse to
HTTP1.1 settings and enable Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
5 WebREF Configuration
With the Configuration Tool of the REF542plus the WebREF function can be
enabled and configured. To have the single line diagrams correct displayed on the
webpage some requirements in the graphical design of the SLD are needed. They
are described in this chapter in more detail.
The language files can be configured according the user needs. It can be selected
i.e. which is the preferred default language to be displayed when starting the
pages of the device and also which is the second preferred language. The second
language is the one selectable on the webpage header. Also any kind of language
file, also non-character based languages, can generate for display.
In the configuration tool also the GSM and the network configuration is handled.
When WebTransfer is not selected the WebREF configuration is also not uploaded or
Note modified.
The REF542plus with the GSM physically connected via the serial interface is the
SMS gateway. Only the REF542plus which has a GSM physically connected can
be SMS gateway. So the REF542plus used for gateway has to be configured as
“REF is SMS gateway” and the MODEM has to be configured. All other
REF542plus have to be configured with “IP address of SMS gateway” set to the
gateway’s IP and the GSM number(s) set.
More then one REF gateway is possible per subnet.
In order not to overload the queue of SMS messages more than one SMS
gateways per subnet is recommended. The queue is designed to have not more
than 10 SMS messages at the same time per gateway.
Phone cards which do not allow i.e. "Disable request for PIN at power up" CAN
Note NOT BE USED ! A phone card without PIN code has to be used.
When the REF542plus has no GSM physical connected the button IP address of
SMS gateway has to be selected. Here also the IP address of the gateway has to
be typed. Verify that the address is correct typed because this can be a cause of
malfunction of SMS messaging.
In the TCP/IP Configuration this 3 options can be set for each REF542plus. In
case there is no router in place the default gateway address can be left open. The
subnet mask is set to a default value 255.255.252.0.
Please read detailed information and documentation 6.4.2 TCP/IP Configuration!
Note The Alarm page need a special handling in order to have the configured alarm
text also translated. See Appendix A
In the submenu Web Pages Languages the user can define a second language.
The text entered in this field is corresponding text for the language button on the
Webpage.
Limitations: The text entered to this field is limited to 16 characters. The text to be
entered must be character based.
Further the default language can be selected. The default language is the
language displayed when open a new WebREF session.
Please note that the English version is always present and cannot be unselected
in the configuration tool.
Note In case you did a translation of the files to a language which is not available in
Quickplace, we would appreciate to get from you the translated files to be stored in
Quickplace for public usage. Please send your files to a member of the global support
team:

After their modification they need to be uploaded to the REF542plus via FTP. That
requires a correct configuration of the Ethernet port with the IP address. When the
language upload is enabled the FTP server is enabled and it can be used as
described below.
Note For security reasons the FTP session is time limited to 5 minutes. After timeout
the user has to login again with Username and Password.
When User Name and Password is typed in, it will reside in the fields until the

o Cross Over connection cable: the cable connects the REF542plus directly
to a PC in a point-to-point fashion and the REF542plus is not connected in
a network. The same cable is needed to connect two hubs between them.
o 1:1 or straight through cable: the cable connects the REF542plus to a
standard Ethernet device such as hub or switch and the REF542plus
belongs to an Ethernet network.
6.2.2 Hubs
6.2.3 Switches
A switch is a device that channels incoming data from any of multiple input ports to
the specific output port that will take the data toward its intended destination. On a
LAN, the switch determines from the physical device address (MAC) in each
incoming message frame to which output port to forward it to and out of.
Even if for WEBREF both hubs and switches are allowed, for industrial networking
environments a fully switched Ethernet architecture is the most appropriate choice.
In a fully switched network, there are no hubs so each network has a dedicated
segment for every node. Because the only devices on each segment are the

switch and the node, the switch picks up every transmission before it reaches
another node and then forwards the data only over the appropriate network
segment. So in a fully switched network, nodes only communicate with the switch
and never directly with each other. See network Topology paragraph for more
information about the network structures.
6.2.4 Router
A router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the
next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination.
The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send
each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the
networks it is connected to.
See Communication System Security paragraph for more information about the
use of standard Ethernet router and security requirements.
For this reason the ring structure is particularly suitable for large plants.
uplink (glass fibre) to the Control Room, by optical links (plastic fiber) to two sub-
networks.
Even if the Modular Switch is the backbone of the communication system, for cost
reasons, the first sub-network is directly connected to the modular switch and not
to a separate switch as in a real star topology.
The MAC address is stored in a DataBase together with the serial number of the
board at production side. On special request the MAC address can be retrieved for
the ABB technical support. In case the user have give the serial number of the
device to the Technical support.
Following pictures shows an example of MAC address writing procedure:
Figure 6-10 – MAC address writing procedure example in the factory mode
Note See also chapter “Definitions” regarding IP address; Subnet Mask; Gateway
address!
The REF542plus has a default IP address. To configure the new IP address the
operator has to configure the IP address before to connect the REF542plus to the
network. This in order to avoid address conflicts between the default IP address and
IP addresses already configured in the Ethernet network.
The REF is fully TCP/IP standard compatible.
6.4.3 IP Address
The REF542plus determines only the last two numbers as IP address! (In this case
2) Means the device has the number 2 in its sub network. It results in, that a
maximum of 254 devices per subnet are possible.
Note The IP address with the number 10.41.75.255 determines a broadcast address.
It is not allowed to configure any addresses with this end figure because all
users in the above the subnet mask range are in case addressed.
It means that a maximum of 254 different sub networks can be configured in the
REF. The REF is only building a switchgear overview for the matching subnet
part. The Identification of the subnet part and IP part is REF542plus specific but is
not in conflict with any standard.
Note The Subnet Mask with the number 255.255.255.x determines only one subnet
and not any other sub network can have access. It is allowed to configure sub
networks with that mask.
Note The default gateway configuration is only required if it is intended to address network
configurable devices from a management station that is separated from them by a
router.
I.e. the next possible alternative mask address allows also a wider range of IP
addresses to have access to subnet 1 and 2. That means also other computers
can have access!
rd
In the example it would allow 3 IP address identifier 48h;49h;4ah;4bh which is in
decimal 72;73;74;75.
The principle features of IPSec are the encryption and authentication of all traffic at
the IP layer. A further functional area is the key management. Authentication
assures that a received packet was really sent by the source indicated in the
packet header and that the data in the packet coincide with the data sent. By using
encryption, listening of the data by third parties has no effect. The key
management is responsible for the secure exchange of the keys. This feature
needs to be enabled on the operating system on client side too. Otherwise
incoming data is not processed. => Pinging is not function!

Quickplace, we would appreciate to get from you the translated files to be stored in
Quickplace for public usage. Please send your files to a member of the global support

A special handling is needed for the Alarm Page. This is a dynamic page, means
the text to be modified of the page is not static, because the text is depending on
the configuration and can be any text instead. (Example: LED 1: TRIP 10KV
Outgoing West) For details see Chapter: Alarmslang Page.
c) Save file content to your directory where you local want to modify the files
d) Now the Alarms language file, as configured!, is stored. That means the
content of the Alarm text, as done with the configuration tool, is available
for modification.
e) Open your editor (I.e. Notepad) and modify the text to your style. Translate
Title, Rowtitle1,Rowtitle2 into your language. Translate for each SAvalue
tag the D-tag (descriptor) and the U-tag (Unit) to your language.
g) Save the modified file with the “Name_2.xml” name conversion. That
means the “_English” extension needs to be replaced from the filename
with “_2”. Filename: alarmslang_2.xml instead of alarmslang_English.xml
languagelang_2.xml
