1. SCOPE :

This standard prescribes the requirements and method of test for zinc phosphating
The work, before painting CSG jobs for protection against corrosion.
1.1 It also gives the details of preparation and maintenance of the phosphating bath
And describes the process by immersion method .

2. TERMINOLOGOY :

2.1 Accelerated Process : A process in which the phosphating solution is of the metal
Phosphate or phosphoric acid type but contains additions that accelerate the
Coating formation , such as water – soluble oxidizing agents , as for example ,
Nitrites , chlorates and or Hydrogen peroxide.
2.2 Classification of phosphating process : as per IS : 3618 clause No: 3.1.3
Class B (Medium weight ) : processes giving coating that consist essentially of
Zinc or other metal phosphates and have a minimum weight 4.3 g/m² of treated
Surface . this class is normally used for general protective purposes under paint
Coatings , oil or grease where less severe duty .
2.3 the coating weight in grammes / sq. meter shall be calculated from the formula ,

Coating weight = (X –Y ) x 10,000

3. PHOSPHATE TREATMENT :

3.1 Process : The process consists of the following stages :


a) surface preparation as per clause No ; 4.2 of IS : 3618
b) phosphate treatment as per clause No; 4.3 of IS; 3618
c) Rinsing as per clause No ; 4.4 of IS : 3618
d) Drying as per clause No: 4.5 of IS : 3618
e) Sealing. As per clause No : 4.6 of IS : 3618

4. Coating weight : The phosphate coating weight is (4.3 g/m²) as per Table -1 of
IS: 3618

5. BATH PREPARATION :

5.1 Mix the chemical and water to the concentration given in Table 1 ( e.g. 3 Lt
Chemical with 97 Lt of water give a bath of 3% concentration ) and stir
Thoroughly . toner crystals / compensating chemical -1 / catalyst –c shall be

5.2 MAINTENANCE :

5.3 The bath shall be maintained at its working at level and the temperature shall be

6. SPECIFICATION FOR PROCUREMENT :

6.1 The indents for procurement of phosphating chemical shall clearly state the brand name
And the corresponding supplier .
e.g. : phosdine – 20 - M/S ACCI
6.2 when it is desired to float enquiries on more than one supplier , the indent shall indicate
The choice as follows :
Maxiphos – ZH – M/S plastipeel chemicals
OR
Asfocoat-ZH – M/S Ashok industry
OR
Bonderite - 875 - M/S Pyrene Rai
And so on.
