Abstract
Standards are of immense importance in all branches of construction including tunnelling. They cover topics
such as safety, design, materials, workmanship and plant. Most standards bodies review their standards
on a five year cycle after with the revision thereafter taking a number of years to complete. Some standards
are used not just in the country or region of origin but in countries throughout the world. Within the last two
years, three of the most important and internationally recognised safety standards in tunnelling have
undergone revision. The most recent revision of BS 6164 “Health and safety in tunnelling” was published
in late 2019, whist the revision of EN 16191 “Tunnelling machinery safety” and EN 12110 “Airlock safety”
remains ongoing. This presentation will cover some of the numerous major changes in these standards.

and has been associated with ENs 16191 and 12110 for over 30 years,
currently leading the revision of EN 12110. He was independent hyperbaric
