Project Objective

Most of the farmers use large portions of farming

land and it becomes very difficult to reach and
track each corner of large lands. Sometime there
is a possibility of uneven water sprinkles. This
result in the bad quality crops which further leads
to financial losses. In this scenario the Smart
Irrigation System using Sensor Technology is
helpful and leads to ease of farming.
Abstract and literature survey

The project is designed to develop an automatic irrigation system
which switches the pump motor ON/OFF on sensing the moisture
content of the soil. In the field of agriculture, use of proper.

The advantage of using this method is to reduce human
intervention and still ensure proper irrigation.

The project uses soil moisture sensor which records the soil
moisture reading, allows and restrict the flow of water through
motor according to the upper and lower moisture limit setup for
the crop.

On this detail, the existing works "Applied
engineering in agriculture", "Data acquisition
system and irrigation controller" and
"Automation in Micro-Irrigation", employs
subsurface drip irrigation using two drip
tapes and are time based systems in which
irrigation time clock controllers, or timers, are
an integral part of an automated irrigation
system.

The papers titled " Feedback Control for Surface Irrigation Management " and "Control
and Automation in Citrus Micro-irrigation Systems", employs open loop systems in
which the operator makes the decision on the amount of water to be applied and the
timing of the irrigation event.

The papers titled, " Drip irrigation scheduling of tomato" and "Design of a Micro-
Irrigation System Based on the Control Volume Method", employ volume based
systems. The pre-set amount of water can be applied in the field segments by using
automatic volume controlled metering valves. It’s depicted that the volume control
systems are more advantageous than time control systems

The papers titled, "Irrigation and water use efficiency", "Presentation of an Irrigation
Management Model for a Multi-cropping and Pattern Setting" and “Productivity of
irrigation technologies”, present a spreadsheet model, that not only provides water
budgeting and forecasting for a multi-plot fields, but also optimizes the acreage of
each plot ensuring that all the crops can be irrigated daily to meet current demands
utilizing all the available water and time during an extended simulation and the
prioritization of plots to be irrigated based on raw deficit and net revenue.
Proposed method with block
diagram or flow chart

The project uses soil moisture sensor which records the soil moisture
reading.

Using soil moisture readings and logic in ESP8266 NodeMCU module
sensor library the circuit will compare the upper and lower moisture
limits and Turn On/Off the motor accordingly

Since the NodeMCU cannot give output voltage greater than 3.3V from
its GPIO so we are using a relay module to drive the 5V motor pump.

If motor pump Turn On Diode connected will turn on as of logic “1”.

The LED connected will be in off mode if motor pump is Off as of logic
“0”.
Block Diagram
Expected outcomes

The mechanism of the system starts with the input power
supply to the sensor .

Sensor will sense and collect the soil moisture data .

The output from the circuit will show once the comparison
is done and circuit will get logic High-“1”
The output can be observed through :
1)LED
2)Submersible Water Pump

Both devices will remain in Off state if logic is Low-“0”
Application with Scope

The system provides several benefits and it can operate with less
manpower .The system supplies water only when the humidity in the
soil goes below the reference

Due to the direct transfer of water to the roots water conservation
takes place and also helps to maintain the moisture to soil ratio at the
root zone constant to some extent. Thus the system is efficient and
compatible to changing environment.

The concept in future can be enhanced by adopting Sensor and IoT
technology. This project is basically dependent on the output of the
sensing arrangement. Whenever there is need of excess water in the
desired field then it will not be possible by using sensing arrangement
technology. For this we will have to adopt the Sensor and IoT
technology. By using this we will be able to irrigate the desired field
in desired amount.
