Hacksaw Ridge
“Hacksaw ridge” is a film based on a true story about a Private Desmond Doss, a
military medic during World War II who saved 75 men in the battle of Okinawa without
firing a single shot and was then awarded with Medal of Honor despite of refusing to
bear a single weapon on religious grounds.
The story started in year 1920 in a place called Virginia, the young Desmond nearly
killed his brother while horsing around which made him remember his religious belief
“Thou shall not kill”.
Years later while Desmond Doss was helping in the community, he saw a man who was
injured, he then quickly aided him and rushed him to the hospital where he meets a
nurse named Dorothy Schutte; he later on tells Dorothy about his interest in Medical
Service.
After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Desmond Doss quickly then enlisted
in the Military to serve as combat medic however, his father was upset by his decision.
Before leaving for service, Desmond asks for Dorothy’s hand in marriage, Dorothy later
on accepts it.
Doss was then placed under the command of Sergeant Howell. He excelled with
the different tasks and challenges that was provided by their commander however,
Doss became an outcast among his fellow soldiers for refusing to handle a rifle due to
his religious belief. They constantly torment Doss in hope for Doss to leave of his own
will. Despite of being beaten up by his fellow soldiers, Doss refused to identify his
attackers and continued to train in hope for serving his own country.
Doss completed six basic training and was then released on a leave with the
intention of marrying Dorothy but was then arrested for insubordination. Captain Glover
then visited Desmond Doss in jail and tried to convince him to plead guilty so that he will
be released without any charges but Desmond Doss refused. At his trial he refused not
guilty but before being sentenced, his father barged in with a letter on his hand stating
that his son’s pacifism is protected by an Act of Congress. He was then allowed to enter
in the field as a combat medic without any firearm.
Doss was then assigned to the 77th Infantry Division; during the Battle of
Okinawa, Doss’ unit was assigned to relieve the 96 th infantry Division while securing the
Escarpment. Doss saved his squadmate Smitty, earning his respect and later on shared
his past about refusement in carrying a firearm. Smitty then apologizes for doubting his
courage.
The next day, the Japanese launched a massive counter attack and drove the
Americans back to their camp and off the escarpment. Smitty was killed during the fight
but while Doss was about to escape with his squad, he heard soldiers crying for help,
he quickly returned to save them which leads him to carrying different wounded soldiers
off the escarpment by belaying them one by one using a rope and kept on praying to
save one more each time he saved a wounded soldier.
The men were inspired by his courage and selflessness and refuses to attack
without him. Then the battle turned tides; Doss saved Glover and his fellow men by
deflecting a grenade that came from an ambush of Japanese soldiers.
Doss was then awarded with the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman
for rescuing 75 soldiers at Hacksaw ridge.
