Applying for Master in Engineering-Design and Manufacturing
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I, Md. Masud Rana, am applying to University of Alberta for the admission to Master in
Engineering Program in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in the field of Design and
Manufacturing. Here is my brief statement of purpose.
During these four years of my undergraduate course, I gained in-depth understanding of the various
techniques involved in problem solving, mainly to cater to the services of the industries,
Manufacturing Processes, Operations Research, Industrial Management, Quantitative techniques
were the other subjects, which enabled me to blend the required action whenever a problem was
posed to me. Behavioral Science was the most interesting subject, which I mastered during this
four-year period. This subject provided me with valuable information that helped me to develop
leadership skills .The factor of empathy really coerced me to instigate leadership skills. I have
worked on several software packages and language, such as, MS Project, AutoCAD 2014, Solid
work 2010, C++ in my undergrad study.
Considering the need of information technology & programming knowledge and coping up with the
modern information technology, I am presently pursuing Professional Master in Information
Technology. I have skill on HTML, CSS, XAMMP and PHP, which will further help to boost my
career.
I always had a liking for the books from a very young age, perhaps this made me inquisitive about
everything I came across yearning to know it’s intricacies. This later helped me immensely when I
started representing my school team regularly at inter-school science festivals.
My first brush with serious research was in final year of my undergraduate course when I
successfully completed a project titled “Conversion of air-cooled heat pump to water-cooled heat
pump” at Mechanical Department of Khulna University of Engineering and technology. The aim of
the thesis was to use portable water of industry for cooling condenser heat exchanger with greater
coefficient of performance (COP) and reduce electricity consumption.
A Graduate education that would enable me to pursue advanced degree is what I have aspired for. I
also believe that good graduate program is an essential step for realizing my long-term goals. I hope
to fulfill my ambition at University of Alberta, which I consider one of the best to pursue graduate
studies. I have gone through the brochure and website very carefully, and I have concluded that
with excellent research facilities and highly knowledgeable faculty, University of Alberta will
provide a perfect environment to focus all my resources towards research. I am confident that I will
be able to meet the standards of the University. I am eagerly waiting for an opportunity to make
significant contribution in research and Development programs of the University.
I fully understand the kind of dedication, perseverance and resolve a graduate program calls for; I
believe that I have the ability and determination to tread on this exciting path.
In conclusion, I do hope that I’II be given a fair chance to realize my objectives by being granted an
admission. I look forward for a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the University.
Sincerely,
Md. Masud Rana
