Row 1 (Right Side, work in back humps of ch [Figure 1]): hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch
across, turn
o Size Toddler: 50 hdc
o Size Child: 54 hdc
o Size Adult: 58 hdc
Row 2 (BLO): ch 1 (does not count as 1st st, here, and throughout), hdc in each st across, turn
o Repeat Row 2 for pattern
Size Toddler: repeat Row 2 for a total count of 12 hdc rows worked in BLO –
piece should measure 22” X 8”
Size Child: repeat Row 2 for a total count of 14 hdc rows worked in BLO – piece
should measure 24” X 9”
Size Adult: repeat Row 2 for a total count of 16 hdc rows worked in BLO – piece
should measure 26” X 10”
Fold fabric in half with right sides together [Figure 2]. Carefully line up the last row of stitches.
Continuing with MC, sl st through the back loops to close the back of HOOD [Figures 3 - 5].
Fasten off, weave in ends, and turn HOOD right side out.
COWL
Position HOOD upside down to crochet along the side edges of the hdc rows [Figure 7]. With the right
side facing you, join MC to the corner at your right, ch 8 [Figure 6].
Row 1 (Right Side, work into back humps of ch): hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across,
hdc on side edge of 1st row of HOOD, 2 hdc on side edge of next row of HOOD, (hdc on side edge
of next row, 2 hdc on side edge of next row)(repeat around HOOD to opposite corner), turn
o Size Toddler: 43 hdc (7 hdc on ch, 36 hdc around HOOD)
o Size Child: 49 hdc (7 hdc on ch, 42 hdc around HOOD)
o Size Adult: 55 hdc (7 hdc on ch, 48 hdc around HOOD)
Row 2 (BLO): ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn
o Repeat Row 2 for pattern
Size Toddler: repeat Row 2 for a total count of 8 hdc rows worked in BLO; mark
the last hdc with a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn
Size Child & Adult: repeat Row 2 for a total count of 10 hdc rows worked in
BLO; mark the last hdc with a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn
Button Edging, Row 1: Continuing with MC, turn work to allow crocheting along the side edges
of rows [Figure 8].
o Size Toddler: ch 1, evenly space 12 sc on the side edges, turn
o Size Child & Adult: ch 1, evenly space 15 sc on the side edges, turn
Button Edging, Row 2 [Figure 9]:
o Size Toddler: ch 1, sl st in first 4 sts, ch 6, sl st into same st as previous sl st, sl st in next
5 sts, ch 6, sl st into same st as previous sl st, sl st in next 3 sts, fasten off and weave in
ends .
o Size Child & Adult: ch 1, sl st in first 3 sts, (ch 6, sl st into same st as previous sl st, sl st
in next 5 sts)(repeat 1 more time), ch 6, sl st into same st as previous sl st, sl st in next 2
sts, fasten off and weave in ends.
Edging along bottom of COWL: Join Color A to the last hdc worked on COWL (the marked
stitch), (ch 15, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in each of next 13 ch, sl st into same hdc)(repeat 1
more time), sc in next 2 hdc, (ch 1, skip next hdc, sc in next hdc)(repeat around COWL to
opposite corner), fasten off and weave in ends.
[Figures 10 - 12]: Place STEM w/ VINE in desired position on HOOD. Using the 48” yarn tail and a
tapestry needle, sew STEM to HOOD. Position FLOWER next to STEM, then use the 24” yarn tail and
tapestry needle to sew into place. Weave in ends .
ADDING BUTTONS
Adjust COWL to determine fit before adding buttons. A completely closed COWL will be a snug fit when
buttoned up [Figure 13]. Or, you can leave a few inches open for a looser fit [Figure 14]. Once
placement has been determined, sew buttons into their respective positions [Figure 15].
