EFP 10: Key Scene Re-Creation Example

(Screenplay)
Scene Play-Indian Horse
Set in the winter of 1961. Somewhere in Manitoba,
Canada. Saul Indian Horse has just watched and
observed a game of hockey for the first time while
attending St.Jerome's Residential school. He is
standing at the edge of a homemade rink in his
winter clothes with his jaw dropped and eyes wide.
ENTERS FATHER LEBOUTILIER SKATING UP TO
SAUL
Father: " There's an order  to the game, Saul, a
process. You may not see it all yet, but with time and
practice, you will."
SAUL KNEELS DOWN AND OBSERVES THE ICE
Saul: "I see it already. The lines they create space
and boundaries. Certain spaces make certain moves
and passes possible."
FATHER KNEELS DOWN BESIDE SAUL AND
PATS HIS BACK.
Father: "I knew there was a reason God pushed me
to introduce you to the game. I am very impressed
you can see this so soon. You have great potential
son."
FATHER WALKS BACK INTO THE TALL RED
BUILDING AND SAUL IS STILL THERE,
STANDING BESIDE THE ICE MUMBLING TO
HIMSELF.
Describing the Scene
A) Saul is a young Ojibway boy in a residential
school in Manitoba. Until this point he has little hope
or joy in his life. This is the scene where Saul is first
introduced to the sport of hockey. Father Leboutilier
(who is one of the only adults who shows kindness
towards Saul) felt the need to show him the game
and see how Saul reacted.
B) This scene in the book shows how the connection
between Saul and hockey first began. He is amazed
and stunned at how beautiful and complex thhe
game is and Saul becomes determined to make
Father proud. Even through everything terrible Saul
endures every day; in the morning when he goes to
the rink and practices, sll the abuse and neglect is
thrown behind him and gives him reason. This game
relates to Saul's previous life in a large way. When
Saul was a young boy his family experienced a lot of
hurt (Saul at Residential School), his mother and
father were alcoholics and scared Saul (the nuns
and priests), hockey becomes an escape for Saul
and a safe place (his grandmother). This is a very
important turn in events for Saul and impacts the
rest of his life with the lessons he learns during the
time he plays this sport.
C) I chose to do a screenplay because I believed I
could show in a clearer way the importance and the
impact it had on Saul through describing and writing.
I enjoy writing and I think it is a strength of mine and
I wanted to challenge myself with this creative
option.
