VANE SHEAR TEST

Introduction
Vane shear test is a useful method of measuring the shear strength of clay. It is a cheaper and quicker
method. The laboratory vane shear test for the measurement of shear strength of cohesive soils, is useful for
soils of low shear strength (less than 0.3 kg/cm2) for which triaxial or unconfined tests can not be performed.
The test gives the undrained strength of the soil. The undisturbed and remoulded strength obtained are useful
for evaluating the sensitivity of soil.

Objectives
1. To determine the undrained shear strength (Cu) of a clayey soil
2. To determine the sensitivity (St) of a clayey soil

Procedure
The experiment is conducted in accordance to :
BS1377 Part 9 (1990) Insitu Density Test

Data & Analysis

Discussion
Sensitivity is defined as the ratio of the undisturbed shear resistance to the shear resistance of the soil
remolded at constant water content. After the initial tests to determine the undrained shear strength of the
soil, the vane is then rotated rapidly through several revolutions to make the soil sample remoulded. The test
is then repeated on the remoulded soils samples and the shear strength in remoulded state is determined
subsequently. Thus,

Sensitivity, St  undisturbed undrained strength

remoulded undrained strength

Torque is twisting force that tends to cause rotation. The point where the object rotates is known as the axis
of rotation and it has unit of Newton-meters. It is assumed that the shear strength (s) of the soil is constant
on the cylindrical sheared surface and at the top and bottom faces of the sheared cylinder. The torque
applied (T) must be equal to the sum of the resisting torque at the sides (T1) and that at the top and bottom
(T2). Thus,

T=T1+T2

The resisting torque on the sides of apparatus is equal to the resisting force developed on the cylindrical
surface of the apparatus multiplied by the radial distance to it. Thus,

D
T1  CuDH 
2

The resisting force T2 due to the resisting forces the top and bottom of the sheared cylinder can be
determined by the integration of the torque developed on a circular ring of radius r and width dr. Thus,

 D3 
T 2   Cu  
 6 

From the above equations,

 D 2 H D3 
T   Cu   
 2 6 
The undisturbed undrained strength is computed using the following formula,

T
Cu   d h d3 
2
  
 2 6

The remoulded undrained strength is computed using the following formula,

T
Cu 
1  1 
 d 2 h  d 
2  3 

Conclusion

1. The undisturbed undrained strength is 6.46 kPa.

2. The remoulded undrained strength is 2.48 kPa.

3. The sensitivity is 2.6 which is considered as low sensitivity of clayey soil.
