A young learner to develop listening and speaking skills are bridge so that one can
have effective communication skills, furthermore one of the requirement to be a 21st
century learner. As said, listening is the neglected communication skill as few have had
any formal instruction in listening unlike reading, writing and speaking. While speaking
in a second language or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding
and challenging of the four skills. In this case, how will a young learner build micro-
skills? What is the role of a teacher to this challenge? Inside the classroom, learning with
various strategies and activities can help them build and improve the said skills.
Teaching speaking skills differ from teaching listening as it requires more students
participation and let young learners talk. Reading tag, debate and using songs and music
are classroom activities suited to help student develop speaking skills. Reading tag is an
strategies to let the student read out loud together, such as reading clearly and using
emotion. As a teacher, you can scaffold or model good reading skills then "tag" or
encourage students to read with feelings with their classmates. For the debate, the
topic should be base on what level of capabilities they can make an argument and have
students state their opinions. In this way, they develop also logical and sound opinion
before voicing out what in their head. Lastly, using songs and music like Jazz chants is
usually done for final performance. The learners practice the rhythm, stress and
intonation of natural conversation in American English. In addition, making them sing
can improve students' musical ability. These three activities are group work and
collaborative learning by positive interdependence with teamwork and interaction to
others.
Clearly, listening and speaking are skills that the student can all benefit from
improving. I believe that a good speaker should be a good listener. Both speaker and
listener have a positive function to perform and have major impact on job effectiveness
in the future, in this way as early as we can, young learners should build this important
skills with the help of the appropriate strategies and activities of a teacher inside the
classroom.
