stone heap – кам’яна купа

clothesline – мотузка для білизни

fritters - оладки
soak your little cloths - замочувати
turn someone else’s stomach – викликати тошноту
Benna - Antiguan folksongs, or benna, symbolize sexuality, a subject the mother fears her
daughter already knows too much about.
not like the slut you are so bent on becoming – не як повія, ти ж схильна до цього
wharf-rat boys – крысенышь
to hem a dress – підшити плаття
a crease - складка
okra -
because okra tree harbors red ants -
dasheen – дашин, тропічний фрукт
if it is with your own spit – навіть якщо тобі все одно
don’t squat down to play marbles - не приседай, чтобы играть в шарики
blackbird - дрізд
a bread pudding – хлібний пудинг
doukona
pepper pot
to throw away a child
to bully
to spit up in the air
Kincaid uses the words “feel” and “squeeze” to turn the act of buying bread into a metaphor for
sexuality, and the baker’s refusal is therefore a sexual rebuke. In response to her daughter’s
innocent question, the mother seems to explode in anger at her, as if one impertinent question
demonstrates the futility of advising a stubborn and undisciplined girl bent on becoming a slut.
