MES481 Power Plant Engineering Assignment 02

1. What is the engine speed used in power plant? Compare

between gas and diesel engine.
Answer For Diesel engine:
Fast diesel engine: maximum rotation about 1200 rpm
Medium diesel engine: between 600-1000 rpm
Slow diesel engine: between 400-450 rpm
For gas engine:
They have 2 engine speed 720 and 750 rpm

Problem 12 The following data is available for a steam power station:

e r as
Maximum demand = 25,000 kW

co
Load factor = 0.4

eH w
Coal consumption = 0.86 kg/kWh

o.
Boiler efficiency = 85%
rs e
Turbine efficiency = 90%
ou urc
Price of coal = Rs. 55 per tonne.
Determine the following:
o

(i) Thermal efficiency of the station.

aC s

(ii) Coal bill of the plant for one year

v i y re

Solution
(i) Thermal efficiency (η) = Boiler efficiency x Turbine efficiency
ed d

= 0.85 x 0.9
ar stu

= 0.765 = 76.5%
(ii) Load factor = Average Load/Maximum Demand
Average Load = 0.4 x 25000 = 10000 kW
sh is

Energy generated in a year (E) = 10000 x 365 x 24

Th

= 87,600,000 = 87.6 MWh

Cost of coal per year = (E x 0.86 x 55)/1000
= (87.6M x 0.86 x 55)/1000
= Rs. 4,143,480

Problem 14 A power station has a maximum demand of 15 MW, a load factor

of 0.7, a plant capacity factor of 0.525 and a plant use factor of 0.85. Find:
(i) The daily energy produced.
(ii) The reserve capacity of the plant.
(iii) The maximum energy that could be produced daily if the plant operating
schedule is fully loaded when in operation.
[Ans. (i) 252,000 kWh (ii) 5,000 kW (iii) 296,470 kWh]

Solution
(i) Average Load = 0.7 x 15M = 10500 kW
Daily energy produced = 10500 x 24 = 252,000 kWh
(ii) Capacity factor = E/(C x 365 x 24)
0.525 = (10500 x 365 x 24)/(C x 365 x 24)
C = 20,000 kW
Reserve capacity = Capacity - Maximum demand
= 20,000kW - 15,000kW = 5,000 kW
(iii) Plant use factor = actual kWh produced/(plant capacity x no. of hours
of plant operation)
0.85 = 252MWh/Daily maximum energy
Daily max. energy = 296,470 kWh

power station for which data are supplied as follows :

eH w
Capacity = 50 MW

o.
Cost per kW = Rs. 600 rs e
Load factor = 40%
ou urc
Interest and depreciation = 10%
Cost of fuel, taxation and salaries = Rs. 36 x 1011

[Ans. 3.71 paise = Rs. 0.0 371 ]

aC s
v i y re

Solution
Energy consumption = 0.4 x 50,000 = 20,000 kW
Energy consumed per year = 20,000 x 365 x 24 = 175.2 x 106 kWh
ed d

Capital cost = 175.2 x 106 x 600 = Rs. 1.0512 x 1011

ar stu

Cost of fuel, taxation and salaries = Rs. 36 x1011

Interest and depreciation = 0.1 x 1.0512 x 1011 = Rs. 1.0512 x 1010
sh is

Energy cost per kWh = Total cost/Energy consumed per year
